This is a rather obscure band, at least outside of their part of the world. They were formed at the end of 1972, while in August of 1973 they started recording their debut. The eponymous release was published a year later, while Ave Rock were touring in Argentina. Influenced by the likes of Deep Purple and pushing their skills to the limit, Ave Rock presented a powerful album full of time changes and alternating tempos with a touch of psych and symhonic rock. The work on Hammond organ recalls heavily early-70's Deep Purple's, while the sound of the guitar is very psychedelic. Their style easily turns from dynamic rhythms to sensitive organ-based themes and from bluesy-rock parts to complicated Gentle Giant-like progressive rock…
Climax Blues Band had undergone a few changes by the time they cut Sample And Hold in 1983. While Peter Haycock (guitar and vocals) and Colin Cooper (sax and vocals) were still holding the fort, they had sampled a new rhythm section. The latest recruits were George Glover on keyboards, Dave Markee on bass and Henry Spinetti on drums. Together they kept the Climax flag flying. This song-packed ten original LP track CD kicks off with an upbeat and optimistic sounding Friends In High Places , with the vocal harmonies set in place by the old firm of Haycock and Cooper. Peter's guitar solo on this song is especially effective. Although the overall band sound veers towards modern Eighties pop, the guitar and drums, while still rock and strings are brought into play on The End Of The Seven Seas . A fine album with informative CD liner notes that put a much loved British band's career and this album into perspective.

If you haven't heard of this band or discovered their kick ass proto-metal sound, this is as good a place to start as any.
Released on the heels of the stilted, static Cahoots, the double-album Rock of Ages occupies a curious yet important place in Band history. Recorded at a spectacular New Years Eve 1971 gig, the show and album were intended to be a farewell of sorts before the Band took an extended break in 1972, but it turned out to be a last hurrah in many different ways, closing the chapter on the first stage of their career, when they were among the biggest and most important rock & roll bands. That sense of importance had started to creep into their music, turning their studio albums after The Band into self-conscious affairs, and even the wildly acclaimed first two albums seemed to float out of time, existing in a sphere of their own and never having the kick of a rock & roll band.
Andy Rock started to play in rock bands in early 2000. The late '90s saw the first widespread interest in North America regarding various Asian psych scenes from the 1960s and beyond, with broad-ranging compilations soon being supplanted by even more specialized efforts. 2001's Hava Narghile, the first in a proposed series, looks specifically at Turkey's homegrown rock efforts from 1966 to 1975…
