Although Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, and Chris Hillman were founding members of the Byrds, when they reunited as a trio at the end of the 1970s they seemed determined to create a sound that did not remind listeners of the earlier group. Though their music was still mainstream pop/rock with folk antecedents, it sounded like contemporary '70s studio rock, even to the point of including a song with a disco arrangement, "Release Me Girl." More important, the trio's vocal blend, heavily augmented by the voices of John Sambataro and Rhodes, Chalmers & Rhodes, did not remind listeners of the Byrds.

When the four-CD Byrds set was first released in 1990, it was something of a landmark in Columbia Records' history on several counts. For starters, it was the first box set ever released by Columbia Records' pop division (as opposed to its jazz division) devoted to a noncurrent act (that is, they'd already issued boxes on Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, but both of them were active artists), and there had been boxes of sorts on Miles Davis and some other jazz figures, but their place in music history was already a given, whereas the Byrds, to Columbia Records' management and a lot of mainstream critics and even most listeners not attuned to their history, were "nothing" but a defunct rock act…

At nearly 90 tracks, this four-disc set is indeed pretty much the ultimate Byrds compilation, running through the group's entire history with Columbia Records, including all the obvious singles like "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Turn! Turn! Turn!," and "Eight Miles High" as well as key album tracks and B-sides, making this a wonderful portrait of a fascinating pop band evolving from folk-rock through psychedelia to country to a nascent template for today's country rock. It's particularly nice to hear two of Gene Clark's most gorgeous love songs, "She Don't Care About Time" and "The World Turns All Around Her," together in one package, along with what might be David Crosby's most gorgeous pop song, the ebullient "Lady Friend." Throw in songs like "So You Want to Be a Rock and Roll Star" and you have a great seat to the story of how a wonderfully quirky folk-rock band played it all out, emerging as one of the most influential bands in the whole history of rock & roll.

3CD SET PROVIDING AN EXCELLENT SHOWCASE OF THE BYRDS LIVE WORK DURING THE LATE 60s/EARLY 70s Featuring three full length FM Radio Broadcasts of performances by different incarnations of The Byrds, in 1968, 1973 and 1978 (albeit by then billed as McGuinn, Clark and Hillman) this boxed set provides an excellent showcase of this ever-changing groups live work during the decade that immediately followed their pop career in the earlier part of the 1960s. The first show featured, from the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco in November 1968, was performed at a time of great change and uncertainty.

THE BYRDS “BYRDS” (’73 REUNION)
The announcement of the reunion album featuring all five original Byrds raised expectations to the point where whatever emerged was almost bound to be an anticlimax. (Imagine the effect of the Beatles reforming around the same time, if you will.)

In early 1978, three of the founding members of the Byrds—Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, and Chris Hillman—were touring the West Coast with a show in which they each played short solo sets before concluding the show as a trio, performing a handful of Byrds classics. The shows were so well received that the trio would later land a record deal and record a pair of new albums, but on February 9, 1978, fans who came to see McGuinn, Clark & Hillman at the Boarding House in San Francisco got a special surpris…
