This new project is a Tribute to Erasmus (1466-1536), a Dutch Renaissance scholar, known as the 'Prince of the Humanists'. Using humanist techniques for working on texts, he prepared important new Latin and Greek editions of the New Testament and also wrote 'In Praise of Folly', 'Handbook of a Christian Knight' and many other works. Erasmus lived against the backdrop of the growing European religious Reformation; but while he was critical of the abuses within the Church and called for reform, he kept his distance from Luther and Melancthon and continued to recognise the authority of the Pope. His middle of the road approach disappointed and even angered scholars in both camps. Jordi Savall regards him as a model of wisdom and tolerance.

"Sehnsucht", a central and nearly untranslatable word of the Viennese fin-de-siècle period, referring to aspects of longing, melancholy, and nostalgia. During the Covid-19 pandemic, a collective "Sehnsucht" arose, in performers and audiences alike. "This programme was given in the empty concert hall of De Doelen in Spring 2021. We decided to issue the recording as an album, recognizing that the performance also represents continuity and mentorship through music. Both young Dutch artists, conductor Rolf Verbeek and baritone Raoul Steffani are associated with the initiatives Equilibrium and Momentum, and joined me and the Camerata RCO for this intimate journey… In "Sehnsucht", we explore two song cycles of Berg, written shortly after Mahler’s 4th Symphony. All these works are presented in special arrangements for chamber ensemble. The Berg Songs are expanded from their original voice and piano to a dialogue of new colours and instrumentation. Mahler’s 4th Symphony is reduced to an intimate soloistic journey, a tender conversation" (Barbara Hannigan).

When he set foot on the stage of Club Doelen on Oct. 28, 1967 in Rotterdam, Thelonious Monk had just turned 50. 15 years later, he disappeared from the music scene and spent his 6 final years in New York, at Pannonica de Koenigswater's, and never touched a piano again. This concert is a testament to his genius. Opening and ending with two "classic pieces", "Ruby, My Dear" and "Blue Monk", he led for over 80 minutes the quartet and his accomplices, Charlie Rouse, Larry Gales, Ben Riley, and guests.
Larry Gales's bass seems to pop out like a jack-in-the-box at the end of "Hackensack", the brass instruments get carried away towards the middle of "We See", and billow out and away in the breathtaking "Oska T."…

"This nicely presented disc offers a thoughtfully planned Fauré programme, and brings the beautiful Pelléas et Mélisande music before a wider public, alongside the more popular Requiem and Pavane. In fact the performance (and recording too) of Pelléas is more successful than those of the other items. David Zinman chooses appropriate tempi to allow the essential sensitivity of the elusive subject of forbidden love to be felt through some of Fauré's most beautiful music. And full marks to the Rotterdam orchestra, who play quite wonderfully in music which does not exactly encourage us to acknowledge their virtuosity. Jill Gomez is on top form, too, in Mélisande's song…" ~musicweb-international
