Victor Hugo’s 1830 stage drama Hernani won overwhelming admiration, and over a decade later Verdi’s attention was drawn to it as an operatic vehicle that would give him opportunities for full dramatic unity. Its subject is the nobleman-turned-brigand Ernani who loves Elvira, herself the object of two other men’s desires. Ernani’s success was immediate and it became Verdi’s most popular opera until he composed Il trovatore. This production won critical acclaim, as did conductor James Conlon for his ‘superb support of the singers and the flexible elasticity he brought to his tempi’

Together with Johann Adolf Hasse, Carl Heinrich Graun was the chief representative of Italian Opera in Germany in the 18th century. The story of »Montezuma« accords with the historical fate of the last ruler of the Aztecs. The text is by King Frederick II, Graun had a close friendship to him and became chief of the circle of Berlin composers. »Montezuma« can be seen as Frederick’s countersignature to his own fate, which made him into a martial war-prince. »Montezuma« shows him in a field of tension: thus the artistically-minded idealistic prince became the royal practical politician: if justice is to be seen to be done to life’s reality, Montezuma must die. Montezuma is mor than just a Baroque opera. This opera can allude to the history of its own nation. It directs our ear to the destiny of America and the destiny of Prussia, to the German’s view, 200 years ago, of America, and American history as the mirror of its own.

Countertenor Tim Mead leads an all-star cast in the Early Opera Company’s recording of Handel’s Amadigi di Gaula, conducted by Christian Curnyn. The opera was first performed in London in 1715, in the first season under the reign of George I, in the King’s Theatre on the Haymarket. The complex, twisting plot features lovers Amadigi and Orianna, imprisoned by the sorceress Melissa (who wants Amadigi’s love). Amadigi’s ally Dardano turns against his friend when he realises his love for Orianna (with whom Dardano is in love) and sides with Melissa. Her plans are repeatedly foiled, and true love triumphs at the final curtain! Amadigi is considerd the finest of his early London operas in terms of musical sophistication, theatrical pacing, and a perfectly balanced exploration of the interconnected relationships, motivations, and emotional divergences among just four dissimilar yet equally arresting characters.

Milano, 5 dic. (askanews) – Venerdì 6 dicembre sbarca in tutti gli store digitali il primo progetto discografico di Sarafine, vincitrice dell’edizione 2023 di XFactor. L’EP, pubblicato da Warner Music Italia, si intitola “Un trauma è per sempre” e contiene 7 tracce che si muovono tra produzioni elettroniche e testi intrisi di storie personali. Parlando dell’anno appena trascorso e della sua scelta, assolutamente controcorrente, di non pubblicare brani o album appena uscita dal talent di Sky, Sarafine ha dichiarato: “E così sono rimasta, in silenzio, a scrivere la mia narrazione e la mia musica” – prendendo spunto dalle parole del filosofo coreano Byung-chul Han (“Il silenzio approfondisce la parola, senza silenzio non c’è musica, ma solo rumore”). Sara Sorrenti (questo il vero nome di Sarafine nata a Salerno nel 1988 ma cresciuta a Vibo Valentia, in Calabria, ha anche vissito in Belgio e Lussemburgo) dopo la partecipazione e la vittoria ad XFactor, un anno fa, aveva deciso infatti di sovvertire le regole del gioco prendendosi tutto il tempo necessario per lavorare alla sua musica.
