Hemispheres is the sixth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush, originally released in October 1978 by Anthem Records. As with the band's previous studio album, Hemispheres was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire and Trident Studios in London with longtime engineer and arranger, Terry Brown. Rush continued its progressive rock sound with the side-long "Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres" and the nine-minute instrumental "La Villa Strangiato". Hemispheres received acclaim from music critics. It reached number 14 in Canada and the UK, and number 41 in the United States. In 1993, the album was certified platinum by the RIAA for selling one million copies.

Arguably the peak of Rush’s technical ambitions, 1978’s "Hemispheres" captures the iconic Canadian trio of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart drawing as much as they ever would on sheer musical ability and compositional chops. By May of 1978, a month before recording was set to begin on Rush’s sixth studio album, all three members of the band had achieved such a high level of mastery on their respective instruments, not to mention their collective playing that they saw fit, for the first time in their career, to begin working on an album without the benefit of having any material prepared. Unsurprisingly, making the album proved to be an arduous task, even for a band as diligent as Rush. The Blu-Ray from 40th Anniversary Edition of "Hemispheres" features the album newly mixed from the original multi-tracks in 5.1 Surround Sound along with the 2015 Stereo Remaster.

Another favorite of true Rush fans, this sixth studio album, released in 1978, once more explored fantasy and science fiction themes in Neil Peart’s lyrics. The final track, the ambitious nine-and-a-half minute "La Villa Strangiato", was the band’s first instrumental. The album peaked at #47 on the Billboard charts, and was the group’s fourth consecutive gold album in the U.S., featuring the singles "The Trees" and "Circumstances".

While such albums as 1980's Permanent Waves and 1981's Moving Pictures are usually considered Rush's masterpieces (and with good reason), 1978's Hemispheres is just as deserving. Maybe the fact that the album consists of only four compositions (half are lengthy pieces) was a bit too intimidating for some, but the near 20-minute-long "Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres" is arguably the band's finest extended track…

Rush began life as a power trio in the Led Zeppelin/heavy rock mode. Over the years the band refined their musical vision as they gained both instrumental and conceptual facility. 1978's HEMISPHERES marks their transition from heavy riff-mongers to full blown art-rockers…

LEGENDARY 1994 BROADCAST SHOW FROM THE COUNTERPARTS TOUR Rush s 1993 release Counterparts, released in October, reached No.2 on the US Billboard Chart. The album reverted back to the band s guitar based sound, dropping the synth-led style they had experimented with in the late 1980s. Rush supported Counterparts with a four-month tour, playing dates arranged in United States and Canada, which kicked off January 22, 1994 at the Civic Center in Pensacola, Florida, and culminated on May 7 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. One of the very best shows played during the tour was the one they played at Dane County Coliseum in Madison, Wisconsin on 2nd April. Recorded for live FM Radio Broadcast, and featuring a fine set-list with both new tracks from the recent albums and a host of classics, the concert was a quite dynamic event that is regularly voted one of the groups finest concerts of the decade. Previously unreleased on disc, the full concert is now finally available on this new 2CD set, providing many Rush fans an opportunity to hear this extraordinary mid-90s performance for the first time.
