Amsterdam-based Aros is an international sextet co-led by Canadian saxophonist Rob Armus and Austrian classical pianist Marion von Tilzer. Their collective influences and experience notably include American jazz and improvised music, European classical and new music and tango. Imagine, for example, Astor Piazzolla and Philip Glass combining forces to create modal jazz with an occasional nod to free improv. There’s quite a range of moods and styles on this 2004 album, from heartfelt lyrical intimacy to driving soul jazz vamps. Recorded and mixed entirely in DSD, this vibrant recording is Aros’s first North American release.

Mexican-born, New York-based filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón directed this Mexican box-office smash hit about a pair of randy upper-class buddies that sparked some controversy for its frank depiction of drug use and sexual exploration. With their respective girlfriends away in Europe, Julio (Gael García Bernal) and his upper-class friend Tenoch (Diego Luna) are looking forward to a summer full of drink, drugs, and cheap meaningless sex. This time, it's set in approximately 1753 (we're told it's been 18 years since the accession of Emperor Chien Lung), and involves a main story having to do with the Emperor's supposed Han origins, a subplot having to do with temporary hostilities between Hung Hua, China's premier crime society and a smaller organization from Tieh Tau Mansion, a sub-subplot having to do with alleged fornication by a member of Hung Hua with its female Chief No. 11, and a sub-sub-subplot having to do with the hasty marriage of two members of the two temporarily hostile societies. All of this for a stinky anti-Ching conspiracy!
