A Common Truth is the second album by Saltland, the solo project of veteran Montr al cellist and composer Rebecca Foon. Following the acclaimed 2013 debut. Thought It Was Us But It Was All Of Us, Foon performed Saltland live in various successful configurations, but as the concept and compositions for a new album began to materialize, she wished to further expand on an approach with her cello as primary source for all sounds on the record. Combining unadulterated processed and sampled cellos, A Common Truth largely reflects this commitment and results in an album of gorgeous integrity, restraint, and meditative intensity. The one notable exception: longtime friend and prior collaborator Warren Ellis (Nick Cave, Dirty Three) is the album's special guest player contributing violin, pump organ and loops to the album's four instrumental tracks.

Rebecca Foon, the composer and musician behind Saltland and Esmerine (and former longstanding member of Silver Mt. Zion) presents a new album entitled Waxing Moon. While best known as an incomparable cellist crafting textural soundscapes and instrumental chamber-rock in the aforementioned projects (and more recently recognized for her creative and organisational work as cofounder of Pathway To Paris), this new collection of songs finds Foon emphasizing piano and voice with striking intimacy and elegance, showcasing a captivating evolution in her always resplendent songwriting.

If three composers can be considered a supergroup, then Sarah Neufeld and Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire and Bell Orchestre) and Rebecca Foon (Esmerine, Saltland, Thee Silver Mt. Zion) fit the definition. They first improvised together in Montreal back in 1999, but didn’t record their efforts; a quarter century later, recalling the instinctive magic of those sessions, they reunited and pressed Record. First Sounds is both a reflection of those early sessions, viewed through the lens of time, and the first installment of a new and hopefully ongoing chapter. One might liken it to the thrill of reuniting with one’s first love, discovering that the chemistry is as strong as ever.

A return to form by band leader Colin Huebert (ex-Great Lake Swimmers), his first new work since 2015's Polaris-nominated Nervous, harkening back to the whispered, textural, bedroom indie-folk of Siskiyou's acclaimed 2010 debut. Huebert self-recorded and played almost everything himself, with contributions from guest musicians including cellist and labelmate Rebecca Foon (Saltland, Esmerine) and Destroyer regulars Joseph Shabason and JP Carter on horns and woodwinds. Opening track "Stop Trying" was commissioned by NYC-based artist/designer Stefan Sagmeister (of Sagmeister & Walsh) as the theme song for the film and installation project "The Happy Show" and "The Happy Film".

Siskiyou returns from a four-year hiatus with Not Somewhere, an album that finds band leader Colin Huebert (ex-Great Lake Swimmers) essentially in solo artist mode, writing and self-recording this new collection of tunes on his own, playing all the guitar, bass, keyboard and drum parts himself. Not Somewhere harkens back to Siskiyou’s magical and understated 2010 self-titled debut in this and other ways: the album’s production rekindles a homespun intimacy, where plain-spoken lyrics grapple with portraits of quiet quotidian despair, fragile existential horizon lines separating perseverance and defeatism, honest and unremarkable lives trapped in cultures of false consciousness, impossible desire, self-analysis and self-medication.
