Two CD collection. Despite the best efforts of RCA to promote them as the British Monkees, a tie-in with Gerry Anderson's cult TV show Captain Scarlet and numerous high-quality singles, somehow London band The Spectrum failed to achieve the same level of success in the UK as they did in mainland Europe. This first-ever official anthology of their career features all of their singles, the 1970 UK LP The Light Is Dark Enough, their contribution to the soundtrack of the little-known 1968 film The Bliss Of Mrs. Blossom, their unissued-at-the-time theme tune for Captain Scarlet and, perhaps most notably of all, recordings that have only previously been released on their insanely rare and largely-unknown 1969 Venezuelan-only album. With the addition of their obscure 1965 debut single for EMI and a 1964 album that they cut (as Group Five) for the French market, All The Colours Of The Spectrum is the definitive document of a fascinating but hitherto little-documented band. It features a 16 page booklet with some priceless period photos and memorabilia as well as the Spectrum story from the cradle to the grave, with reminiscences from founder member Tony Atkins.

Symphonic Power metallers Wind Rose have signed a deal with Scarlet Records for the release of their new album ‘Wardens Of The West Wind’. After having attracted enthusiastic reviews with their debut album ‘Shadows Over Lothadruin’ in 2012, followed by many shows all over Europe with renowned acts such as Wintersun, Finntroll and Epica to name a few, the band started working on the follow-up with the supervision of musician and producer Cristiano Bertocchi (Labyrinth, Vision Divine), combining their classical background with powerful guitars, huge orchestrations and epic atmospheres. ‘Wardens Of The West Wind’ was produced by Simone Mularoni (DGM). The beautiful artwork was handled by Felipe Machado Franco (Blind Guardian, Rage, Rhapsody Of Fire). Wind Rose surely come as a pleasant surprise for every fan of Melodic Heavy Metal. ‘Wardens Of The West Wind’ will be available starting from February 3rd, 2015.

Greenwich Village legend gets deserved superstar tribute. Eric Andersen is a song writing legend who hit the floor running with his early albums as part of the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 1960s. He could folk with the best of them, but when he launched off with his own voice – well, ‘Thirsty Boots‘, ‘Violets of Dawn‘ more than pointed the way for those in his audience who would go on themselves to be major artists. And later recordings would unveil classics like ‘Time Run Like A Freight Train‘, ‘Salt on your Skin‘ and ‘Before Everything Changed‘. An artist perhaps most associated with the poetry and expression of love – and passionate love at that – Eric Andersen certainly doesn’t shy away from the topical or the political, being as bluntly harsh as a Dylan when he choses to be. It’s no wonder, then, that such a catalogue of great and notable names have taken part in this expansive – it covers three CDs – release which, as the title suggest, pays a tribute to a songwriter who, frankly, deserves such a tribute. Eric Andersen is not forgotten – he’s still recording and playing live after all – but one listen to this collection and one can only wonder why he isn’t even better known.

This is a very special boxed set by the short-lived but excellent Japanese band Shingetsu, compiling just about everything the band ever did in the studio along with material by the various solo and offshoot projects that came into being after the band dissolved. The result is something I would consider essential to all fans of the golden age of '70s progressive rock. Influenced by classic King Crimson, Mike Oldfield, Pink Floyd, and particularly Genesis, Shingetsu did not appear on the scene until the late '70s but brought with them that pure, symphonic, cinematic sound shared by those other bands earlier in the decade, completely untainted by punk and the other commercial music which had now started to plague progressive music here in the west…
