The New Miles Davis Quintet made its first visit to the recording studios on November 16, 1955. By October 26, 1956, when they made their last session for Prestige, Davis had signed with recording giant Columbia, he had featured the most influential band in all of jazz (which would spawn the most charismatic musician of the '60s), and was well on his way toward international stardom. Listen to The Musings of Miles, an earlier quartet date with bassist Oscar Pettiford, then listen to the difference bassist Paul Chambers and tenor saxophonist John Coltrane make.

Trumpeter Raphe Malik is a distinguished if underappreciated master of his instrument and the free jazz movement. For this recording date – a concert at the Fire in the Valley Festival in 1997 – Malik assembled a band of giants in tenor savant Glenn Spearman, drummer Dennis Warren, and bassist George Langford. Malik and Spearman, having worked in the Cecil Taylor unit at different times, have like-minded approaches to composition, and are therefore a perfect match…

This 1963 album by legendary bassist/composer Charles Mingus is one easily one of the most impressive and sprawling works in jazz history. The album features the signature pathos of his earlier work—screaming saxophones, a rocking and unpredictable rhythm section, and explosions of harsh dissonance followed by intensely emotional interludes that recall the great Romantic composers. An absolutely essential addition to any music-lover’s library, "The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady" is a true and unparalleled benchmark of jazz composition and improvisation.

Ray Russell has had quite the glittering career. Setting off at age 15 with the John Berry Seven, the guitarist went on to play with the Graham Bond Organisation and then Georgie Fame & the Blue Flames. Eventually, Russell would lend his talents on-stage and/or in the studio to a plethora of performers, from Tina Turner to Lulu, the Bee Gees to Phil Collins, and branching out in the '70s to compose for the small screen. Amidst this busy career, Russell also put together the odd band, like the Running Man, whose sole, eponymous album was released with little fanfare in 1972. The core trio of Russell on both guitar and bass, vocalist/organist Alan Greed, and vocalist/drummer Alan Rushton was supplemented by Harry Beckett on trumpet and flügelhorn and the late Gary Windo on tenor sax.

Live!! is the 1996 EP by Japanese duo MC Hellshit & DJ Carhouse. The MC of the group is Eye Yamatsuka of Boredoms, the DJ of the group is Otomo Yoshihide. Eye grunts and screams while Otomo becomes a DJ in the noisiest sense. This is the second of two EP's the two did together, both share the same title but are indicated with the amount of exclamation points. This one has two exclamation points so it is the second and final edition.

The band hails to a sound inspired by the early years of Rock & Roll when horn sections were an integral part of the sound that is reminiscent of the times when honking and screaming saxophones fueled the dance floor in night clubs.

Make a cover album is always a risky exercise. I would say more extreme: play with material already walking the recesses of the brain of the listener can pave the way or condemn a brainy game outright rejection revision. Over eighteen years ago, one of the greatest singers of all time was a machete forget to Cohen and raised the maximum voltage level one piece, coated vocals and layers, would rock the annals of the twentieth century: "Little Viennese waltz" became "Omega", thanks to the duo Enrique Morente and Largatija Nick, untouchable, sacred. Until now.

The original Who's Better, Who's Best: The Videos was a handy laserdisc consisting of 17 videos, an inordinate number of them overlapping at least in part with material from the movie The Kids Are Alright – which was OK, as the latter was never widely available as a laserdisc…
