Our new recording of quartets by Haydn, Mozart, Vanhal and Dittersdorf who played quartets together in Vienna in 1784. Michael Kelly, the Irish tenor who was the original stammering Don Curzio in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, tells us in his Reminiscences about the occasion and we are delighted that the world-famous actor, Simon Russell Beale, has recorded a script for us, adapted from Kelly, which sets the scene.

The Room started out as a bunch of chums in Blandford in Dorset getting a band together for a bit of fun and also to make their fortune playing at local village halls. This was 1968, post-flower power, but very much Hendrix and ultra-light guitar strings. As time went by, the band gained experience and moved on up the ladder, gigging around the country, making a record… Recorded at the Decca studios in the summer of 1970, Room's Pre-Flight was an ambitious blend of Rock, Blues, Jazz and Classical influences. The album was critically well received but unfortunately, like many strong releases, did not achieve the hoped for breakthrough to greater commercial success.

It is a sad fact that the reputation and fame of many composers, built up over a lifetime, evaporates on their death bed. Si mes vers avaient des ailes, a short song written when the composer was just thirteen, is the work on which Hahn’s posthumous fame had, until relatively recently, relied, and is included here in the composer's own transcription for cello and piano. Recording catalogues now reveal an ever-growing list of works—concertos, symphonic offerings, songs, piano pieces and chamber music—by this most urbane and charming composer. The C major Violin Sonata of 1926 assuredly leads us into the world of Fauré fifty years earlier, its easy lyricism and textural transparency bearing a kinship with the elder French musician’s A major Sonata. This melodic suppleness is continued in Soliloque et Forlane, now with viola and piano demonstrating Hahn’s skill in turning out a jaunty tune. The Nocturne and the Romance, both for violin and piano, reveal further an ability to combine passionate intensity with a sense of refined melodic and harmonic delicacy. The Piano Quartet of 1946 adopts a more muscular and impassioned character. Melodic charm and restfulness in the Andante are interrupted by the central passage which sails into troubled and expressive waters and the finale rolls gracefully to its compelling conclusion. This charming recording is the perfect showcase for Room-Music, a consortium of internationally acclaimed musicians who wish to perform and explore chamber music in a more flexible and innovative form.

Born in Bergamo, Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) wrote string quartets, 18 in all. While this output may be dwarfed by the 65 or so operas he composed, that they exist at all may be a surprise. Mostly written in his youth while he was waiting for his first opera commission, the surest way to fame and fortune for a young composer, they exhibit the promise that he was later to fulfill in the opera house.

It's now half-a-century since British folk rock became A Thing, with the early practitioners breaking new ground and inspiring an entire scene that peaked in the late Sixties/early Seventies. Earnest young post-Dylan singer/songwriters moved away from the intimacy of the folk clubs in favour of the nascent college/university circuit. Counter-cultural iconoclasts The Incredible String Band became a seismic influence on a whole raft of bands now categorised as acid-folk, Pentangle's use of acoustic instrumentation within a nominally rock framework attracted many emulators (though arguably no real equals), while Fairport Convention graduated from their initial American West Coast-indebted sound to explore their own country's musical heritage, thus establishing the concept of indigenous English folk rock (a baton that would be picked up by the likes of Ashley Hutchings' post-Fairport venture Steeleye Span and many others).

Recorded almost entirely live in September 2015, during the concerts at the Teatro Sociale of Gualtieri (Reggio Emilia), is a concept album consisting of two CDs: a first disc with four new songs and seven songs by the piano repertoire, each of which wants to represent metaphorically the stages that we cross in the life, and a second disc containing the Sonata No. 1 in Sol Minore symbolizing the twelfth room.
