The recording also fulfills a need to revisit these lyric masterpieces in a form that emphasizes not only their idiom (many of these pieces, including Wohin? and Auf Dem Wasser Zu Singen, exhibit writing that is more guitaristic than pianistic) but their polymorphic essence.

Thee Experience Of Ecstacy is a 2CD Sly & The Family Stone bootleg taken from two live shows recorded at the Fillmore East on 5 October, 1968. One is the early set, one is the late set and slightly longer. The only part of the show that is incomplete is the intro to "Turn Me Loose" on Disc 2, but that is how it is on the disc. Both shows are from the soundboard and sound incredible, to the point where you're also able to hear interaction between Sly and the band. Lots of energy. This was released on Big Fro Discs, a bootleg label specializing in soul.

Released in 1970 during the stopgap between Stand! and There's a Riot Goin' On, Greatest Hits inadvertently arrived at precisely the right moment, summarizing Sly & the Family Stone's joyous hit-making run on the pop and R&B charts. Technically, only four songs here reached the Top Ten, with only two others hitting the Top 40, but judging this solely on charts is misleading, since this is simply a peerless singles collection. This summarizes their first four albums perfectly (almost all of Stand! outside of the two jams and "Somebody's Watching You" is here), adding the non-LP singles "Hot Fun in the Summertime," "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)," and "Everybody Is a Star," possibly the loveliest thing they ever recorded…
