Stereo recordings from the early 1960s. Everyone has sentimental favorites, and this set is one of mine. Yes, the ensemble has a few rough spots now and again—nothing serious—but the playing has such warmth and emotional generosity, that bigness of spirit that’s so often forgotten in today’s Beethoven performances. The Budapest Quartet clearly frames its view of the composer in terms of the great, late quartets. So Op. 18, cultured and intelligent thought it is, could do perhaps with a touch more energy in spots, a leaner basic sonority. But once we hit the great middle quartets it’s smooth sailing right through to the end.

Available exclusively from Sony's Pop Market website, The Columbia Masters is a compact, 16-disc box set that includes Earth, Wind & Fire's 15 Columbia albums - from 1972's Last Days and Time through 1990's Heritage - individually packaged in mini-LP replica sleeves. A 16th disc, dubbed Constellations: The Universe of Earth, Wind & Fire, collects rarities and several of leader Maurice White's outside productions for the likes of Ramsey Lewis, Neil Diamond, and Barbra Streisand. There's also a thick booklet with notes penned by White. Since EW&F's Columbia releases were remastered/reissued in 2004, a fair portion of the group's devout fans will see this as redundant; part of that faction will also covet disc 16, unavailable elsewhere. Those who had been waiting for a comprehensive box finally get one, with a price that should average out to less than 10.00 U.S. dollars per disc.

During this two-decade association with Columbia Records, Andy Williams chalked up more hit singles and sold more albums than any other traditional pop crooner of the period. Boosted by the popularity of his Emmy-winning television series The Andy Williams Show, the personable singer bridged the classic American Songbook of standards and showtunes with the modern pop-rock songs of the 1960s and 1970s. His widespread popularity saw Williams become the host of the Golden Globe Awards in the 1960s followed by annual duties fronting the Grammy Awards in the 1970s. All of which begs the question: why haven't we seen (and heard) a rarities collection from this iconic vocalist? Now, for the first time ever, Andy's immense archive of Columbia recordings has been combed through to dig up a bounty of previously unreleased tracks from his peak 1962-1972 era, including covers of familiar tunes such as You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling, 'This Guy's in Love with You, Homeward Bound, Too Young, and I Don't Know How to Love Her.
