A breakout success, the album peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart, dominated radio waves with hits like "Sex Type Thing" and "Wicked Garden," and has been certified 8x platinum by the RIAA. The band also took home the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance for their smash single "Plush."

From Tower Records Japan's website, the release schedule for their new series of Blue Note SACD reissues. There is no information provided about sources (master tapes vs. 24/192 files) or mastering engineers. Robert Vosgiens' DSD downloads of some of these albums became available this year at North American vendors, and many BN titles have been released in all-analogue transfers on BN Classic Vinyl and BN Tone Poet. I have the BN Classic Vinyl LP of "Out to Lunch!" remastered by Kevin Gray, and the Vosgiens DSD download. It would be useful to have more technical details about this new group of Tower Japan BN SACDs.

The Clown was Charles Mingus' second masterpiece in a row, featuring Jean Shepard (yes, that Jean Shepard from the holiday movie A Christmas Story) on the title tune narrating a story about a clown attempting to please the world with his performances. The Clown also introduced two of Mingus' finest compositions in the driving, determined "Haitian Fight Song" and the '40s-flavored "Reincarnation of a Lovebird," a peaceful but melancholy tribute to Charlie Parker; Mingus would return to both throughout his career.
