What can anyone add to the praise that has deservedly been heaped on Robert King and the King's Consort's 11 discs of the complete sacred music of Vivaldi? Can one add that every single performance is first class – wonderfully musical, deeply dedicated, and profoundly spiritual?

The genre of this CD is quite hard to pinpoint. It’s blues, it’s classical, and at the same time, new-agey. and trippy, Moby-ish. The beauty of this is that all these genres culminate in what can be described as pure ear candy. Stand out tracks include “Slow and Easy”, a remix of an old John Lee Hooker classic. The remix surprisingly does JLH’s deep, sorrowful voice justice, which is accented by blues guitar and cello. JLH also lends his vocals to the following track, “Sonnet XVIII”, which concludes the blues journey Sacred Spirit have created. It is interesting to hear the classical music interwoven through each track, as apparently these musicians are playing entirely from the heart, blending so gracefully with the blues instruments and vocals. “Lay Down” is another fine example of how well blues and classical music mesh together. Sacred Spirit: Culture Clash is for all music fans who are open to new and old sounds, and for those that appreciate the Blues played in a different style.

When he died, Nicolaus Bruhns was just 31 years old, and only twelve of his vocal works and five organ compositions have survived. On the strength of these, he is nevertheless considered one of the most prominent North German composers of the generation between Buxtehude and Bach. Buxtehude was in fact Bruhns teacher, and thought so highly of him that recommended him for a position in Copenhagen. There he worked as a violin virtuoso and composer until 1689, when he returned to Northern Germany to become organist in the main church of Husum. It was here that most if not all of the extant works were performed.

Cambridge University Chamber Choir performs three twentieth-century English song cycles for mixed choir, including the rarely-recorded A Garland for the Queen. A Garland was composed to commemorate the Queen’s coronation in 1953 by a selection of the finest English composers including Finzi, Bliss, Bax, Tippett, Vaughan Williams, Howells and Ireland. The two works by Benjamin Britten, AMDG and Sacred and Profane, are virtuoso show pieces for mixed choir.
