Saint Frances

„With the wonderful Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra we are presently exploring Schuberts quatuor „Death and the maiden“. Of course we have to include Schubert’s earlier song with the same title on the poem of Matthias Claudius. This song belongs to the medieval tradition of the dance of death. Therefore we also play „Toden Tanz“ (with poor me dancing), an ancient death dance written up by the German organ player August Nörmiger (1560-1613).

Laura sa di essere una madre iperprotettiva e - in fondo - gelosa di suo figlio Daniel, un brillante neolaureato dal futuro luminoso. Cosi, quando Daniel le presenta la sua nuova fidanzata, Cherry, lei si impone -di essere gentile e addirittura invita la ragazza per qualche giorno di vacanza nella villa di famiglia a Saint-Tropez. Ma tutti i suoi buoni propositi vanno in frantumi quando scopre che Cherry si fa riempire di regali e, soprattutto, ha mentito a Daniel riguardo al suo passato e al suo lavoro. E poi c'è sempre quella sgradevolissima sensazione che Cherry nasconda un lato oscuro e che stia tramando per metterla in cattiva luce col figlio…

Robert Shaw leads the Robert Shaw Festival Singers in these powerful works of Francis Poulenc. Poulenc experienced a spiritual crisis which led to the composition of his powerful Mass in G major, which is dedicated to the memory of his father. Paired with this work are his Four Motets for Christmas, Four Motets for a Time of Penitence, and Four Short Prayers of Saint Frances.
