Eight months prior to their triumphant worldwide debut at Woodstock, Santana played a 4-night set at the Fillmore West on December 19-22, 1968. The resulting 2-disc recording from this fertile developmental period ably demonstrates the remarkably creative path Carlos Santana took to inevitable fame. Utilizing a line-up that included Gregg Rolie, vocals and keyboards, David Brown, bass, Doc Livingston, drums and Marcus Malone, congas, the band's sound was a tasty gumbo of rhythm and passion.

Santana is a veteran guitarist noted for his distinctive Tijuana jazz-influenced playing style. Born in Mexico, but resident in the USA from childhood, he has been the leader of the group Santana since 1966. Originally the 'Santana Blues Band' they debuted, as Santana, at Bill Graham's Fillmore West theater in San Francisco on June 16, 1968.

Released in 1988, Viva Santana! is a generous 30-track overview of Santana's first 20 years of recording. Appropriately, it concentrates on the band's glory years of the late '60s and early '70s, when both Carlos Santana and his supporting musicians were on fire. There are several unreleased cuts, including live tracks included for hardcore fans, but Viva Santana! is most useful as a thorough overview for curious listeners. ”

Prior to recording their first album in early 1969, Santana swapped Livingston and Malone for Michael Shrieve and Mike Carabello, adding percussionist José Chepitó Areas as well. This incarnation recorded the group's eponymous debut, then set out on tour, where they had a career-making appearance at the Woodstock festival in August 1969. That was the same month Santana appeared in the record stores, and it was a swift success, climbing its way to number four on Billboard's album charts during the course of its two-year run on the charts.
