Maggio 1939. Centinaia di donne - casalinghe, dottoresse, cantanti d'opera, politiche, prostitute -, provenienti da un carcere comune, raggiunsero prima in treno e poi su camion un luogo nascosto nei boschi a nord di Berlino. Attraversarono, poi, gli enormi cancelli di ferro tra gli insulti, le urla, i latrati dei cani e le percosse delle guardie. Erano le prime prigioniere di Ravensbrück, il nuovo campo di concentramento femminile "modello" ideato da Heinrich Himmler. In sei anni vi furono rinchiuse 130.000 donne, provenienti da più di venti Paesi in tutta Europa. Erano di diversa estrazione, nazionalità, credo politico; solo poche tra loro erano ebree: Ravensbrück serviva ai nazisti per eliminare tutti "gli esseri inferiori" Zingare, esponenti della Resistenza, nemiche politiche vere o presunte, disabili, "pazze" dovettero sopportare privazioni, sevizie, malattie, lavori forzati, esperimenti "medici" ed esecuzioni sommarie..

De 1939 à 1945, au camp de Ravensbrück, 132 000 femmes et enfants furent les victimes silencieuses des nazis. Résistantes, Tziganes, Témoins de Jéhova, handicapées, prostituées ou juives, elles étaient pour le Reich des déclassées, des « bouches inutiles ». Parmi elles, 8 000 Françaises dont Germaine Tillion et Geneviève de Gaulle-Anthonioz.

This anthology of The Divine One's greatest works of the late 1950s to early 1960s (1958-1962) includes more five-star performances than any chanteuse should be able to lay claim to. The anthology kicks off with the Basie Orchestra (sans Basie) "No Count Sarah", a date which simply skips nimbly from peak to peak beginning with 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes', progressing through' Darn That Dream', 'Just One of Those Things', to the improvised title track and my favorite 'Cheek To Cheek'. The album "Dreamy" is, in my view, the apogee of Romance while "The Divine One" runs the gamut of her musical palate. "Count Basie-Sarah Vaughan" is the successor to "No Count Sarah" and is in its selections superior, IMO.
