Beijing Underground is the debut-album by the Anton Mangold Quartett. The band is based in Germany and the CD-release is under the Classic/Crossover/Jazz Label Dr. Heart Music. A vast musical spectrum is embraced by the young musicians: From hard-swinging straight-ahead Jazz, like the title track Beijing Underground, to explorations of various kinds of folk music, like the hauntingly beautiful Going West, to Heavenly Peace, which is a soulful ballad with vibrant harmonies. In Behai Park West the band takes off on a smoothly grooving theme featuring Zhihan Xu on guitar, while being supported with vocals - sung gracefully by the bands bass-player. In Frustration the band creates stunning structures build out of emotions and sincere improvisation.

A mid-'70s West German film about a 14 year old's descent into drug abuse, prostitution, and general sleaze led to this 1981 soundtrack, comprised entirely of previously released songs from David Bowie's "Thin White Duke" period. The bleak music of Bowie's collaborations with Brian Eno provides a fitting backdrop to the film, as his icy soul killer pose perfectly reflected the frozen and fragmented lives of Christiane and her gang: an "alternative family" taking respite in discos and underground train stations. Removed from that context, the album is still enjoyable for the sheer quality of the songs.

On their follow-up, Strange Trails, Lord Huron settle into the Western themes and sense of open prairies that marked the band's debut, Lonesome Dreams. Frontman/songwriter Ben Schneider fully embraces the American West/Troubadour character, illustrated even in song titles like "Dead Man's Hand," "Meet Me in the Woods," and "The Yawning Grave." The album's lyrics tell haunted stories of adventure and survival ("On the night you disappeared/Oh, if I had seen it clear/But a strange light in the sky was shining right into my eyes"), with nature imagery ("In a grave out here where the carrions cry"), and the occasional old-time turn of phrase ("Before I commence my ride/I'm asking Lily to be my bride").

Writing in Smash Hits, Bev Hillier described "You Know How to Love Me" as a "great album" that was "relaxing, pleasant, easy listening and anything similar that you can think of". Hillier went on to describe Hyman's voice as "amazing and perfectly used".
