The life and work of Robert Schumann has a dual characteristic. In immersing oneself in one or the other, we face an almost systematic duality. He himself was aware of this, appearing in both his writings and in his compositions sometimes under the guise of Eusebius, the tender, introverted dreamer, and sometimes as Florestan, the fiery, impassioned fighter. In studying his life and work, one gains the impression that the greatest lucidity and some form of madness stood side by side in him. But as one deepens one’s knowledge of him as a creator and as a man, one realises that what appears to be contradictory is in fact quite cohesive.

Asked the question ‘How many sonatas for violin and piano did Johannes Brahms compose?’, many lovers of chamber music would probably answer three, and maybe also add their respective keys and opus numbers. When pressed, a number of them would also remember the so-called F.A.E. Sonata, a collaborative effort by the young Brahms, Albert Dietrich and their mentor Robert Schumann. But very few would probably think of the two Opus 120 sonatas, composed in 1894 for clarinet (or viola) and piano, but a year later published in the composer’s own versions for the violin.

… Violinist Ulf Wallin and pianist Roland Pöntinen recorded the Sonata No. 1 in 2009 in Stockholm and the remaining sonatas in 2010 in Berlin, and there is a noticeable improvement in sound quality in the later recordings, possibly due to closer microphone placement and more resonant acoustics. Even so, Wallin and Pöntinen are consistent in their penetrating interpretations and they deliver handsome performances that hold the album together and make it a fine artistic achievement.

Robert Schumann's three Sonatas for violin and piano were all composed between 1851 and 1853, and have suffered from neglect like other works from this period in the composer's life. Here the performers are Ulf Wallin and Roland Pöntinen: a team who recorded their first disc for BIS in 1991, and whose partnership has been described as 'masterfully cultivated ensemble playing'

After recording the sonatas for violin and piano by Ludwig van Beethoven, a triptych that won numerous awards, including the Juno for Classical Album of the Year - Small Ensemble (2022) and an ADISQ award, Andrew Wan and Charles Richard-Hamelin continue their fruitful collaboration by performing the complete sonatas for violin and piano by Robert Schumann (1810-1856). A perfect work to highlight the complicity that has developed between the concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the pianist who won the silver medal at the 2015 Frédéric Chopin International Piano Competition.

Ulf Wallin and Roland Pöntinen made their first duo-recording for BIS in 1991 and have released acclaimed recital discs ranging from Schumann and Liszt to Alfred Schnittke, by way of Schoenberg and Hindemith. With the present disc they bring their most recent project to a close: a recording of all the works by Johannes Brahms for violin and piano. These include not only the three well-known and -loved numbered violin sonatas, but also the Scherzo from the so-called F.A.E. Sonata and the composer’s own violin versions of the two sonatas for clarinet and piano.
