Quando il corpo di un predicatore, abituale frequentatore di uno strip club, viene rinvenuto nella stanza di un motel del Tennessee, a essere accusata del brutale omicidio è l'affascinante quanto misteriosa cameriera Angel Christian. Il proprietario del club, intenzionato a scagionare la sua dipendente, decide di assumere per la difesa Joe Dillard, avvocato un tempo cinico e disincantato ora non più così disposto ad accettare il compromesso tra il lato più brutale della professione e la propria coscienza. Dillard è sul punto di mollare, ma uno come lui non può resistere al richiamo di un caso così scottante, che coinvolge ambienti tradizionalmente ermetici e schivi, e che rischia di segnare il destino di persone innocenti. In fondo il lavoro è l'unica scappatoia da un'esistenza al limite della sopportazione, con una sorella tossicodipendente da poco uscita di prigione e una madre gravemente malata. Joe sa che solo ricacciando i propri tormenti dentro di sé potrà contribuire a dissotterrare una verità che è molto più scomoda di quanto immaginasse.

Though she's often lumped into the freak folk category, Jessica Pratt is gauze-wrapped edges and soft curves; there is none of the angularity of, say, Karen Dalton, or the calculated quirk of Devendra Banhart. At times, she has more in common with jazz queen Blossom Dearie's light touch. For her fourth album, Pratt wanted to capture "big panoramic sounds that make you think of the ocean and California''—more specifically, the lost-innocence period post Summer of Love, when the sun and Hollywood stars burned brightly but Los Angeles was gripped by fear and loathing. The initial "promotional tour" was extended, and finally lasted almost two years, ending in 1989 after playing around 197 concerts to about 5.5 million people in total, including 3 dates at Madison Square Garden (5–7 October 1987) and 2 nights at Wembley Stadium (5–6 August 1988). The tour took Pink Floyd to various exotic locations they had never played before such as shows in the forecourt of the Palace of Versailles, Moscow's Olympic Stadium, and Venice, despite fears and protests that the sound would damage the latter city's foundations.

Two tenor sax colossuses - Paul Gonsalves and Tubby Hayes - join forces on 'Just Friends', a rare EMI album recorded in 1965, which here makes its first appearance on CD. Apart from one standard number (the title track), the music comes from the pens of several premier British jazzers including Ian Hamer, Stan Tracey, Jimmy Deuchar and Hayes himself. In the band are such luminaries as Jackie Sharpe (baritone sax), Les Condon (trumpet), Stan Tracey (piano), Lennie Bush (bass) and Ronnie Stephenson (drums).
