It was released on October 9, 2015, by Interscope and Polydor Records as a follow-up to Stars Dance (2013). It is her first album released under her new recording contract with the labels, after completing her contractual obligations with previous label, Hollywood Records, with the compilation album For You and the single "The Heart Wants What It Wants", in 2014. Gomez has cited artists such as Janet Jackson and Christina Aguilera as influences on the record, a pop and electronic dance music album with a tropical beach sound. Lyrically, the album discusses themes of love, heartbreak, and confidence. The album also features a guest appearance from American rapper ASAP Rocky and collaborations with producers such as Rock Mafia, Hit-Boy and Stargate.

The big news for Selena Gomez before the release of her sixth album, Rare, is that she finally had a number one single after years of getting close. The introspective and emotionally raw ballad "Lose You to Love Me" surrounded Gomez's aching vocals with sparse piano, swirling strings, and lush background vocals, and connected instantly with her fans and anyone who ever had to ditch someone in order to save themselves. That song, and the record it appears on, mark something of a turning point in her career. Where in the past she focused mostly on breezy sentiments, playful frothy pop, and more recently sexy come-ons, now she's digging deeper and mining her own life and loves for subject matter in more obvious and revealing ways. It may not be totally confessional – and each song is helped to the finish line by teams of professional songwriters – but within the realm of mainstream modern pop, Rare is surprisingly honest lyrically and Gomez sounds more open and invested in the songs than ever before.

Selena Gomez's fifth album, Revival, is also her first for Interscope, whom she signed with after breaking from Disney. With production duties split between the likes of Stargate, Hit Boy, Max Martin, Benny Blanco, and Rock Mafia, and songwriting by Charli XCX, Julia Michaels, Justin Trantor, and many more, the record's creation followed the usual pop template of creation by committee. However, this time out Gomez executive produced and co-wrote six of the songs, as she sought to express herself more fully and grow as an artist. The record featured both chart-topping singles that preceded it, "Sober" and "Good for You."

The "Revival (Special Edition)" in addition to the 16 tracks included an additional 3 live versions of singles from the album + 3 bonus videos for the single "Good For You", "Same Old Love" and "Hands To Myself".
