Shakedown

Whilst his albums have always garnered excellent reviews and well-deserved commercial success, Tyler Bryant has rarely been fully satisfied due to some misunderstandings with his former record label. Determined to afford himself greater artistic freedom, the artist decided to launch his own label. This decision, according to him, will not only allow him to record the songs he really wants to make but also to respect an increasingly loyal audience that he considers intelligent, open-minded and willing to follow him and his artistic endeavours. Not only is Shake the Roots a real rock’n’roll record with a more raw and authentic sound, but a collection of catchy and unifying songs that don’t need to be overly produced to shine. This record is all about the art of inspired song writing.

On the evening of May 12, 2023, Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown performed direct to disc at Welcome To 1979 in Nashville, TN to celebrate the studios 15th anniversary. In honor of this, 15 Universal Audio 1176 compressors were used in the recording of this record. The performance was mixed and mastered LIVE as the band played. No stops and no do overs. Here's a glimpse into that magical Nashville night for those of you who couldn't be there.

Since the Grateful Dead were notorious for recording awkward studio albums, it always seemed that the answer to their problem was simply getting the right producer to coax magic out of the band – and nobody would seem better suited for the position than Little Feat leader Lowell George, whose own band shared the Dead's tendency to wander and jam in a live setting, yet made almost nothing but good studio records. But 1978 was not a great year for either camp, as the Dead were drifting in their attempts to score a crossover hit for Clive Davis' Arista Records, while George was pushing Little Feat toward disbandment as he was inching closer to his premature death in 1979.

You can trace a line from Petty to Tyler Bryant, even if it’s not necessarily a straight one. Bryant, a 26-year-old from Nowheresville, Texas via Nashville, Tennessee, fits squarely in the ‘no-nonsense heartland rocker’ bracket. He’s got the black leather jacket, the fuck-you sneer in his voice. Hell, he’s even got the Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers T-shirt.

Shakedown Street was the tenth studio album by the Grateful Dead where they moved away from their traditional sound to dance and funk music. Shakedown Street contains several of the Dead's finest tunes, presented with a minimum of fuss for maximum impact. The band scored a hit with their infectious Latin-tinged arrangement of the Rascals' "Good Lovin'."
