Shangri La Yacht

After three years of tossing and turning in anticipation of a new Enrique Iglesias disc, fans of the Latin superstar may find themselves losing still more sleep over early reviews that take Insomniac to task for straying too far from the sound that launched him to the loverman stratosphere. No need, though. Despite the presence of Lil' Wayne on the ultra-steamy, street-edged "Push" and some unapologetically catchy pop tunes any male singer, ethnicity aside, could have fun with ("Do You Know," for example, and "Tired of Being Sorry," a Ringside re-tread), white-hot machismo and Latin charm permeate Insomniac reliably.

After a string of infrequent and not particularly lustrous albums, Steve Miller has bounced back with what is surely his best effort since Fly Like an Eagle in 1976. Like that record, Italian X Rays surges forward with an intrepid spirit that's equal parts high tech and down-home.

This Collectables compilation packages Esther Phillips' first two LPs for Atlantic, 1965's And I Love Him! and the following year's Esther Phillips Sings. Gradually switching from an R&B chart name to a pop singer with a subtle power over the blues and jazz, Phillips didn't hit the charts much during the year ("And I Love Him" was the big exception), but she did record great versions of some solid material: "Shangri-La," "It's All Right With Me," "Every Time We Say Goodbye," and others. The sound is solid as well, leaving this collection as a great next step after the Atlantic wrap-up, The Best of Esther Phillips (1962-1970).

UK collection. Few back catalogs have been treated with such little respect as that of the wonderful Shangri-Las. Despite the quality of their material - which remains highly collectable - they've suffered a history of badly compiled albums with shoddy packaging and more to the point appalling sound reproduction. RPM have produced a vastly improved sound quality collection before but are now able to go even one better by introducing the true stereo versions of their key recordings. In addition RPM are adding both sides of the hideously rare debut single from the group in turn making it's debut on CD. The packaging is in digipack format as part of RPMs Special edition series containing a dynamic new front cover, new photographs and liner notes.
