Statistical Procedures

This book occupies a unique position in the field of statistical analysis in the behavioural and social sciences in that it targets learners who would benefit from learning more conceptually and less computationally about statistical procedures and the software packages that can be used to implement them.

This book presents new theoretical approaches for statistical network analysis in random variable networks. Robustness and optimality of statistical procedures for various network structures are detailed and analyzed. Applications to social networks, power transmission grids, telecommunication networks, stock market networks, and brain networks are presented through a theoretical analysis which identifies network structures. Graduate students and researchers in computer science, mathematics, and optimization will find the applications and techniques presented useful.

This textbook considers statistical learning applications when interest centers on the conditional distribution of the response variable, given a set of predictors, and when it is important to characterize how the predictors are related to the response. As a first approximation, this can be seen as an extension of nonparametric regression.
