Discover the extraordinary life, times, and art of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975), great musical master and flawed but faithful witness to the survival of the human spirit under totalitarianism. He is without a doubt one of the absolutely central composers of the 20th century. His symphonies and string quartets are mainstays of the repertoire.

Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra dir. Jonathan Darlington - Shostakovich Symphony No. 15 & Mozart Haffner-Sinfonie Studio Master

The Living Concert Series embodies, in a very special way, the basic concept behind Acousence's Philosophy label. The Symphony No. 15 in A major op. 141 is Dimitri Shostakovich's last orchestral work. It was written in 1971, four years before the composer's death, and although the symphony bears the distinct traces of a late work and Shostakovich had been struck by a serious illness, this is by no means his last musical creation. The "Haffner-Symphony" was written in a turbulent time: Only one year before, in March 1781, Mozart had given up his secure post at the court of the archiepiscopal court in Salzburg and he was now trying to build up a position as a self-employed musician. On July 16th the "Entführung aus dem Serail" had been premiered at the Viennese Burgtheater. It was the time when Mozart married Constanze Weber against the will of his father.
The Studio Master files are 192kHz / 24 bit.

In the winter of 2012/13, the Haus der Kunst in Munich – one of Europe’s most important museums for contemporary art – hosted the exhibition ECM – A Cultural Archaeology. The goal of curators Okwui Enwezor and Markus Müller was to show the range of the label’s artistic endeavours in music, graphic art, and photography and its creative interchanges with film, theatre and literature. For this exhibition, Manfred Eicher and Steve Lake created this box-set accentuating directions in ECM's rich musical history. Many themes and streams are touched upon here including the range of composition in the New Series, music for and from films, imaginative historical reconstructions, trans-cultural music, ambient minimalism, and jazz and improvisation of many hues, in a collection with a playing time of more than seven hours.

Written in 1950-51, Shostakovich's 24 Preludes and Fugues are an obvious answer to those who know you, especially since the composer got there after being a jury in the first edition of the competition, You know in Leipzig. For this contest, the young Tatiana Nikolayeva won the prizes and the votes, and it was for her that Shostakovich conceived her own cycle. Unlike the Preludes and Fugues by Bach (here, cited here), which follow each other by following the "suite of the fifths" with alternating major and minor tones according to their relative harmonic relations. In other words, if the first pair is in C major, the second is in C minor, C minor, G major, C major. While in Le Clavier well tempered, the first is in C major, the second in C minor, the third in C sharp major, rising one semitone chromatic each time. Neither system has more validity than the other, of course; What matters is the architectural rigor, the foundation of the idea.

The Mariinsky label was launched in May 2009 with a ground-breaking recording of Shostakovich’s early opera The Nose, which received much praise and many awards. Gergiev continues to work his way through the Shostakovich oeuvre with the Mariinsky and here adds the two piano concertos, plus the fifth piano concerto by the popular Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin.
