On his new album, Silver Apples of the Moon, Brandon Whyde gives listeners a glimpse into his past a past that includes heartbreak, loss and self-discovery. His voice has been described as soulful, whiskey-soaked and even “a freight train on fire” – qualities that shine through on his latest release. Silver Apples of the Moon was recorded with Grammy-winning producer Jimmy Nutt in Muscle Shoals, Ala. – an area known as “The Shoals” – the album includes some of the veteran musicians who helped The Shoals earn acclaim as a hotbed of musical talent. Spooner Oldham, who played keyboards on Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman” and as part of several of Neil Young’s projects and Bob Wray, who’s played bass on more than 30 #1 country hits, are just a few of the artists appearing on Silver Apples of the Moon. The SteelDrivers frontman, Gary Nichols, makes a special guest appearance on the song “Self-Medicated”.

Morton Subotnick is one of the United States' premier composers of electronic music and an innovator in works involving instruments and other media, including interactive computer music systems. Most of his music calls for a computer part, or live electronic processing; his oeuvre utilizes many of the important technological breakthroughs in the history of the genre. The work which brought Subotnick celebrity was "Silver Apples of the Moon". Written in 1967 using the Buchla modular synthesizer (an electronic instrument built by Donald Buchla utilizing suggestions from Subotnick and Ramon Sender), this work contains synthesized tone colors striking for its day, and a control over pitch that many other contemporary electronic composers had relinquished. There is a rich counterpoint of gestures, in marked contrast to the simple surfaces of much contemporary electronic music, and there are sections marked by very clear pulses, another unusual trait for its time.

This is one of the most original Japanese progrock bands, they were active in the Eighties and made a serie of interesting albums. Most of them contain classical sounding keyboards, cheerful violinplay, Japanese (and some English) vocals and many waves of Mellotron. The most obvious hints are KING CRIMSON (Mellotron and guitar), UK (keyboards and violin) and PFM (classical sound and violin).

“Many of the ideas in this collection have now been so completely assimilated into popular listening that it may sometimes be hard to remember how surprising it all was on first outing. Some of it still sounds pretty exotic. These CDs are important as part of the story of how we got to where we are now—the cultural conversation so far—and as a still fruitful repertoire of future possibilities.”

There have been previous attempts to marshal a lot of British psychedelia into one compilation, but Real Life Permanent Dreams is a little different from those. This four-CD, 99-song box set isn't a best-of, but more like an attempt to assemble a very wide (though still representative) cross section of material, most of it pretty obscure to the average listener. For the most part, it succeeds in delivering a high-quality anthology that manages to offer a lot to both the collector and the less intense psychedelic fan, though it's by no means the cream of British psychedelia.

Although the two pieces are quite far removed in terms of the time they were written, and also in terms of sound, there are unifying themes which are more than interesting to follow. In Touch (1969) we have a piece of rhythmic off-world electronics, closely related to Subotnick's seminal Silver Apples of the Moon, that possesses Subotnick's superb sense of musical intuition. 'Jacob's Room' (1986), on the other hand, is harder to categorize as it uses vocals and processed instrument recordings to create some kind of bizarre science fiction opera. To listen to both pieces together they instantly sound worlds apart, but it's really only time that separates them, the themes are surprisingly intact and both are engrossing - as is more or less everything from this pioneer.

For a band that named itself after the first dog in outer space – and previous albums called Sounds of the Satellites and Silver Apples of the Moon – you'd think Laika would make spacey ambient music with a focus on quirky beats. And they do, sometimes. The emphasis, though, of Good Looking Blues, the London quartet's third album, is to give equal attention to Margaret Fiedler's smooth, somewhat gothic-and-soul-influenced vocals and the band's mixture of rock, slow electronic, and sit-on-your-couch dance music. Fiedler, who went to grade school with Liz Phair in Winnetka, Illinois and later played in a Smiths-sounding college band with Moby, speak-sings dark fictional stories about life's basic themes: love, sex, death, and work. But it's not quite that simple. For instance, on one of the album's standouts, "Black Cat Bone," she tells a story of a woman who kills her evil husband with voodoo: "Rocks for my pillow and sand for my bed/For better or worse, I left him for dead." Laika's talent is crafting a particular mood.
