The Habsburg Imperial Court was a melting pot of many different cultures in which the zest for living of southerners, the Slav melancholy, French formalism, Spanish courtliness and the original German-speaking Alpine cultural region intermingled. Together with his Ars Antiqua Austria ensemble, Gunar Letzbor occupied himself over a ten year period to produce this 10CD "Klang der Kulturen" box, a musical tour of the individual countries that formed the roots of and influences on the music of baroque Vienna, documenting them in live recordings, with each CD representing one country.

Silvius Leopold Weiss was acknowledged as the greatest lutenist of his age, composing over 600 pieces for the instrument organised into suites or sonatas. In these arrangements for guitar, Danijel Cerović has selected the only two of Weiss’s Sonatas to have been given poetic titles, Sonata No. 29 "L’Infidèle", with its bell-like sonorities and triumphant conclusion, and Sonata No. 28 "Le Fameux corsaire", thought to refer to the buccaneering pirate Blackbeard. Cerović also includes two of the great Tombeaux, elegies of profound and poignant depth.

The lute by Sixtus Rauwolf heard on this recording was probably built in the last decade of the sixteenth century. Some hundred years later, in 1715, it was converted to suit the musical tastes and demands of the baroque period. For this disc, Jakob Lindberg has chosen works that could have formed part of the repertory of the presumably German owner of the instrument at around the time of its final conversion.

The David harp is a type of harp from the German Baroque period. The figure of King David is usually depicted on the head of the harp column. The strings are fitted with brays, which gives this instrument a typical buzzing sound. In addition to the David harp, however, a number of other types of harp were used in baroque Germany, such as the single-row hooked harp, on which the pitch could be altered with hooks on the strings, or double-row chromatic harps.

For his first solo CD Jadran Duncumb combines Weiss' astonishing and rarely-played late D-minor Sonata with two inventive and unheard Sonatas by Hasse, adapted by an unnamed lutenist and survivng now in a manuscript in Leipzig. The disc culminates in Weiss' famous D-major Passacaglia; a piece that perfectly reflects the splendour of the Dresden court and its orchestra at the time.
