Audiences at the October 6, 1927, premiere of the first film with spoken dialogue were electrified by what they could now see and hear when star Al Jolson (born Asa Yoelson, 1886-1950), in the film's best-remembered line, proclaimed: "Wait a minute, you ain't heard nothing yet!" To watch this historical movie from the man who was known as The World’s Greatest Entertainer, today is to relive that exciting event. In our edition we have included as bonus tracks the two first movie performances by Al Jolson: two songs recorded in September 6, 1926, at New York’s Manhattan Opera House for a one-reel film entittled A Plantation Act.

Great John Barry album makes world CD premiere at last! Original soundtrack from John Schlesinger 1930's-era drama with Donald Sutherland, Karen Black, William Atherton. In 1974, famed Dot label producer Tom Mack produces two back-to-back classic soundtracks to Paramount movies with similar 1930's Los Angeles settings: CHINATOWN (for ABC label) & THE DAY OF THE LOCUST (for London label). Mack produces both LPs with emphasis on original scores while weaving in period music important to each respective movie, greatly enhancing mood of final album. For THE DAY OF THE LOCUST, John Barry anchors with rich, warm main theme, then surrounds with appropriate variants to fit each scene. For climactic sequence, Barry writes what might be his most intense, dramatic cue of a long and famed career! Intrada CD features same classic program as London LP, presented from mint condition stereo album masters vaulted at Universal Music Group. Notes by Jeff Bond. John Barry conducts.

If you lived outside America during the 1950s, when rock & roll exploded across the world, the opportunities to see your idols in the flesh were few and far between. Even at home, in North America, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis could only be in one place at a time when performing live. So the obvious marriage was made, between rock & roll and the movies. And back then, all the songs you hear spread over this comprehensive 3CD collection could be heard – and seen! – at the cinema.

Faith Akin's 2009 comedy Soul Kitchen followed the adventures of a handful of eccentrics and bohemians who operate and patronize a rundown eatery in Germany, and true to the title the film's soundtrack album features plenty of classic soul and R&B tracks, as well as selections from the movie's original score. Soul Kitchen includes numbers by Al Green, Ruth Brown, the Isley Brothers, Dyke & the Blazers, Quincy Jones, and others; the collection also includes vintage reggae from Burning Spear and contemporary German techno and dance music by Deichkind and Solomun & H.O.S.H.

This is an important document, not least because what is actually captured on these discs is the first performance of this work since 1772. The score is presently housed in the archive of the Berlin Sing-Akademie after its discovery in the Ukraine. C.P.E.’s version of the Christ story is a dynamic one, with plenty of drama and much interaction between the various soloists and the chorus - a chorus that represents the Jews as well as performing the chorales.

One From the Heart is the score to the most misunderstood of Francis Ford Coppola's films. Far ahead of its time in terms of technology, use of color, montage, and set design, its soundtrack is the only thing that grounds it to earth. Coppola's movie is a metaphorical retelling of the exploits of Zeus and Hera set in Las Vegas. Coppola claims to have been taken with the male-female narrative implications of the track "I Don't Talk to Strangers," off Tom Waits' Foreign Affairs album. That cut was a duet with Bette Midler. Midler wasn't available for One From the Heart, however, so Waits chose Crystal Gayle as his vocal foil. The result is one of the most beautifully wrought soundtrack collaborations in history…

Holidays, Christmas, Country-Pop, Soundtrack

Here Nashville's cast nails a collection of holiday classics for a real-world LP. The album moves with the sonic diversity of contemporary country radio, from string-filled ballads to—in the case of "Christmas Coming Home"—a Bo Diddley-esque syncopated stomp. Sam Palladio's gently sung take on Joni Mitchell's "River" is quietly moving, and Aubrey Peeples' saucy "Merry Christmas Baby" breaks the boundaries of country altogether, exaggerating the horn riffs and guitar flourishes of old-school rock ‘n’ roll.
