Brett Dennen's fifth album, Smoke and Mirrors makes it clear that the singer/songwriter's spirit is clearly aligned with the troubadours of the early '70s. Before you even hear a note, glancing at the cover image of Dennen standing amid a sunny panorama of trees and mountains gives you an idea of where he's coming from, and the nature-boy narrative of "Wild Child" echoes that imagery.

With an unusual amount of time on his hands during a year of lockdown, saxophonist/composer Steve Cole found himself pondering the difference between our authentic selves and the illusions we project to others.

In Music for Pieces of Wood, Joe Beribak, sitting in the center of a semicircle, begins to strike the first pattern. Joe will maintain this pattern, unflinchingly, for the entire duration of the piece. Katy, Jessica, Derek and Eddie contribute all of the sinuous and minimalist variation which they weave into filaments of sound and rhythm as if all five musicians were one person. The debut studio album by Sisters Of Mercy. "First and Last and Always" proved to be a major record and extremely influential in shaping the gothic rock genre. On this new "Digital Edition" sound quality wise this isn't any improvement on earlier versions and could do with being made louder. But as an album there are lots of great tracks here and the bonus tracks especially after hours are worth downloading if you don't already own them.
