And although he released a lot of music over the years, 14 studio albums in total, live recordings were always thin on the ground. It's not that he hadn't toured, but it seemed as if nobody had been around to tape the performances until filmmaker Liam Barker chanced on an archive of recordings in 2020. The first of that material was released on 'Song of the Avatars: The Lost Master Tapes', and 'Snow Beneath the Belly of a White Swan: The Lost Live Recordings' completes the story, packing up a dredge of unreleased material with plenty of Basho's better-known standards. It's not as well-recorded as his studio gear for obvious reasons, but there's an intimacy to these tracks that helps fill out Basho's larger-than-life personality. And the album's bundled with liner notes, photographs and flyers to further illustrate the enduringly influential guitarist's history.
