Social Network Algorithms

The Encyclopedia of Social Network Analysis and Mining (ESNAM) is the first major reference work to integrate fundamental concepts and research directions in the areas of social networks and applications to data mining. While ESNAM reflects the state-of-the-art in social network research, the field had its start in the 1930s when fundamental issues in social network research were broadly defined.

A persistent problem when finding communities in large complex networks is the so-called resolution limit. This thesis addresses this issue meticulously, and introduces the important notion of resolution-limit-free. Remarkably, only few methods possess this desirable property, and this thesis puts forward one such method. Moreover, it discusses how to asses whether communities can occur by chance or not. One aspect that is often ignored in this field is treated here: links can also be negative, as in war or conflict.

This book focuses on social network analysis from a computational perspective, introducing readers to the fundamental aspects of network theory by discussing the various metrics used to measure the social network. It covers different forms of graphs and their analysis using techniques like filtering, clustering and rule mining, as well as important theories like small world phenomenon. It also presents methods for identifying influential nodes in the network and information dissemination models. Further, it uses examples to explain the tools for visualising large-scale networks, and explores emerging topics like big data and deep learning in the context of social network analysis.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Multidisciplinary Social Networks Research, MISNC 2019, held in Wenzhou, China, in August 2019.

This book contains a selection of the latest research in the field of Computational Social Science (CSS) methods, uses, and results, as presented at the 2018 annual conference of the CSSSA. This conference was held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, October 25 – 28, 2018, at the Drury Plaza Hotel. CSS investigates social and behavioral dynamics in both nature and society, through computer simulation, network analysis, and the science of complex systems.

This book sheds light on the challenges facing social media in combating malicious accounts, and aims to introduce current practices to address the challenges. It further provides an in-depth investigation regarding characteristics of “Pathogenic Social Media (PSM),”by focusing on how they differ from other social bots (e.g., trolls, sybils and cyborgs) and normal users as well as how PSMs communicate to achieve their malicious goals.

An increase in the demand for resource sharing across different sites connected through networks has led to an evolution of data- and knowledge-management systems from centralized systems to decentralized systems enabling large-scale distributed applications providing high scalability.
