This is arguably the first recording to fully flesh out the aural expanse for which ECM has come to be known. Although I am well aware of the immense groundswell of musical activity that was the 1970s, certainly an album like this was a refreshing and altogether mind-altering experience for those fortunate enough to be young musical explorers at the time. Featuring a lineup of musicians who would go on to weave ECM’s significance into the fabric of time, Solstice is a tour de force of musicianship, writing, arrangement, and recording.

In search of a new season to conquer (after a long run of successful A Winter's Solstice recordings), Windham Hill took aim at summer in 1997. The first Summer Solstice disc isn't exactly top-down cruising music; it's more of a back-porch soundtrack suitable for watching fireflies or for mulling the fading light of a languid summer's day. A few pieces (violinist Tracy Silverman's take on Vivaldi; pianist Liz Story's "The Promise") feel a bit weighty for the theme here, but the disc is well stocked with compensatory highlights. Among them are the intelligent, softly propulsive melody strung together by Paul McCandless (oboe) and bassist Michael Manring ("In Our Jasmine Days"); David Arkenstone's twinkling, mandolin-centered dance in the sun ("Companions"); some classic Will Ackerman ("Incondizionatamente") on parlor guitar; a charming, slowly unfolding melody found in "Summer Star" by harpist Lisa Lynne; Story's lovely, ruminating "Out of Time"; a sunny frolic on harmonica by George Winston; and a hushed, jazz-inclined medley of Beach Boys tunes by pianist Philip Aaberg and guitarist Scott Mathews. –Terry Wood

Upon The Winter Solstice is a compilation album that was released exclusively at Kohl’s Department Stores during the 2013 holiday season. 100% of the proceeds go to the Kohl’s Cares charity to support kids’ health and education. This is not to be confused with the recently released Tales of Winter: Selections from the TSO Rock Operas compilation which covers all five TSO albums and one EP. So far, that’s an album that’s only been released in Europe anyway. Upon The Winter Solstice focuses solely on the group’s first three Christmas releases (known as the Christmas Trilogy): Christmas Eve and Other Stories, The Christmas Attic and The Lost Christmas. Each album is represented with four songs.

2016 release. Scala & Kolacny Brothers celebrate the group's 20th anniversary with Solstice. On it, the acclaimed Belgian rock choir puts it's indelible sonic stamp on 20 songs by a group of artists who span genres and generations, from David Bowie and John Legend to Nine Inch Nails and Britney Spears. Led by pianist/composer Steven Kolacny and his brother, conductor Stijn Kolacny, the group continues to offer up dramatic renditions of popular songs on Solstice, it's first studio album in five years and the follow-up to Scala & Kolacny Brothers (2011). For this collection, the group's powerful choral arrangements take familiar tunes to new places, like Queen's "Fat Bottomed Girls," Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams," and the dark R.E.M. classic "The One I Love." With 20 songs, one for each year of the band's journey, the album covers a great deal of musical ground and shifts genres seamlessly from the alternative rock of The Cure's "Boys Don't Cry," and the pop of Michael Jackson's "Dirty Diana," to "Barbie Girl," an international hit for the Danish electro-pop group Aqua.
