Solution Probability

This volume contains two review articles: "Stochastic Pro­ gramming" by Vo V. Kolbin, and "Application of Queueing-Theoretic Methods in Operations Research, " by N. Po Buslenko and A. P. Cherenkovo The first article covers almost all aspects of stochastic programming. Many of the results presented in it have not pre­ viously been surveyed in the Soviet literature and are of interest to both mathematicians and economists. The second article com­ prises an exhaustive treatise on the present state of the art of the statistical methods of queueing theory and the statistical modeling of queueing systems as applied to the analysis of complex systems.

Probability: Basic concepts , Theorems & Probability Distributions

Measure theory and integration are presented to undergraduates from the perspective of probability theory. The first chapter shows why measure theory is needed for the formulation of problems in probability, and explains why one would have been forced to invent Lebesgue theory (had it not already existed) to contend with the paradoxes of large numbers. The measure-theoretic approach then leads to interesting applications and a range of topics that include the construction of the Lebesgue measure on R [superscript n] (metric space approach), the Borel-Cantelli lemmas, straight measure theory (the Lebesgue integral). Chapter 3 expands on abstract Fourier analysis, Fourier series and the Fourier integral, which have some beautiful probabilistic applications: Polya's theorem on random walks, Kac's proof of the Szegö theorem and the central limit theorem. In this concise text, quite a few applications to probability are packed into the exercises.

Scientists in optics are increasingly confronted with problems that are of a random nature and that require a working knowledge of probability and statistics for their solution. This textbook develops these subjects within the context of optics using a problem-solving approach. All methods are explicitly derived and can be traced back to three simple axioms given at the outset. Students with some previous exposure to Fourier optics or linear theory will find the material particularly absorbing and easy to understand.
