Sixty volumes were planned with hopes for even more. Unfortunately it seems that only forty will be issued. Thus, rather than a proud celebration of the full wealth of this keystone of classical art, the truncated result is tinged with regret for what might have been.

Unlike other labels subjected to exhaustive multi-disc retrospectives like this whopping ten-disc Revolutions in Sound: Warner Bros. Records – The First Fifty Years, Warner Brothers never embodied a scene or sound: they've always embodied what a major label should be – a dominant force that chronicles and dictates the sound of the mainstream. Sixteenth-century Spanish composer Francisco Guerrero is featured in a reissued disc of motets for four, five, six, eight and 12 voices, with and without instruments. They come from a handful of collections published between 1555 and 1597 and show Guerrero’s skill in evoking a wide range of moods, joyful, sombre and contemplative in turn. Jordi Savall’s ensemble is well-equipped to project the skilfully wrought structures and expressive allure of the music. Some of the pieces fare better than others in respect of vocal texture and ensemble. Tenors and basses occasionally lack tonal refinement but, at their strongest the performances provide a radiant conspectus of Guerrero’s masterly motets.

In 1999 Mutant Pop Records was kind enough to unleash a seemingly harmless little platter by the Seattle band The Wanna-Bes, on an unsuspecting punk underground. Any pop-punk fan smart enough to put their chips on the table was treated to a top-class hook-filled, pop-injected, punk romp with more than a slight hint of a 50's Rock And Roll influence. The Wanna-Bes were truly something special. The fact that they meld their classic Ramones three-chord, balls-to-the-wall attack with sugary sweet vocals, and power-pop hooks puts them at the head of their class in Rock 'N' Roll High School and sends those other Ramones-core bands running scared… Here is the band's debut (and last) full-lenght album, released on Ben Weasel's Panic Button Records.
