Three sonatas, three composers, three different universes, but three pieces dating from the same period, the 1930s and 1940s, between the rise of the totalitarian regimes and the Second World War and written for the same forces, a violin-piano duo.It was the Paris Opéra that saw the 1928 premiere of the ballet Le Baiser de la fée (The Fairy’s Kiss), which Igor Stravinsky concocted from pieces by Tchaikovsky. Movements from this neo-classical score were rearranged in part four years later, with the help of the violinist Samuel Dushkin, under the title Divertimento.

Here is one of the most unusual albums from Frank Peter Zimmermann’s discography, recorded with his long-time chamber music partner Alexander Lonquich. It highlights rare modern French pieces for violin and piano, from sonatas by members of the Groupe des Six to the witty sonatina of Françaix and Satie’s Choses vues à droite et à gauche. A repertoire dear to Zimmermann’s heart, who often confessed his deep attraction for the French culture (its arts, its language… and its red wines).

The first collaborative CD by sister and brother Mari and Mihkel Poll from Estonia displays a magnificent panorama of twentieth century music for violin and piano. Musicians perform George Enescu's III Violin Sonata – a reflection of the composer's multicultural experience, growing up surrounded by Romanian and Slavic folklore and learning violin from gypsy musicians. Follows the gloomy Violin Sonata composed by Francis Poulenc during World War II, as well as the sophisticated Fantasy for Violin and Piano – Arnold Schoenberg's last instrumental work. Finally, we will get acquainted with the work of Erkki-Sven Tüür, one of most intriguing contemporary composers from Estonia.

British composer Sir Lennox Berkeley still needs to be more widely appreciated, and this recording puts his music into a wider context of the environment that shaped him. France played a vital part in Berkeley’s development: apart from being a Francophile, circumstances brought him into contact with Nadia Boulanger, with whom he studied formally during the years 1926–1932, which Berkeley spent in Paris. While there he also met Francis Poulenc, among other artistic figures.
