Louis Myers - I'm A Southern Man (1978) [Reissue 1995] Music

Despite his vaunted reputation as a versatile standout on the Windy City circuit, Louis Myers seldom recorded as a leader. This is the best set he did as a front man; cut in 1978, it was ironically recorded in Hollywood. Fellow ex-Little Walter sideman Freddy Robinson shared guitar duties with Myers (who also played harp) on a well-produced set strong on tradition but with one eye cocked toward contemporary developments (witness Myers's stylish diatribe on "Women's Lib").

A former U.S. Marine turned Mercury Records staff producer responsible for everything from Bruce Channel's "Hey Baby" to Ray Stevens' "Ahab the Arab," Shelby Singleton formed his Nashville-based SSS International Group in 1966. Although best known for fare like Jeannie C. Riley's country-pop juggernaut "Harper Valley P.T.A.," SSS and its spinoffs, Silver Fox and Minaret, also generated a vast sampling of deep-fried soul, of which Kent's "Southern Soul Showcase: Cryin' in the Streets" represents the first official digital survey to date. In comparison to the backwoods soul wrought in places like Memphis and Muscle Shoals, SSS productions are clearly the product of Nashville the songs blur the lines between soul and country to the point where such distinctions become irrelevant.

SOUTHERN STEEL "Get On Through" out of Miami, Florida in 1974 firmly resides in the upper realms of rare early '70s southern rock LPs and the brilliant guitar interplay, vibrant vocals and finely crafted songs will seriously grab late '60s westcoast rock ears as well. It's really accessible stuff, heartfelt country inflected vocals with appealing vivid guitar textures and rhythms that fly. Echoes of Buffalo Springfield, Flying Burrito Brothers, Byrds, more on the rock than the country side but genuine about both. It's southern but it's also eastcoast-westcoast. In fact the opening track titled "San Francisco Man" is loaded with searing guitar licks and propulsive rhythmic action hitting pleasure points similar to the first Moby Grape LP. "Get On Through" contains thoughtful song oriented outdoors rock with little in the way of "south's gonna rise again" attitude, bluesy grit, bad women, whiskey, or hard livin' roadhouse action. These guys genuinely sound turned on to life, everyday regular dude seeker post '60s style and it is contagious. You can really feel it when the sweet southern fried dual guitar leads cascade out at just the right moment.
