Although originally associated with fusion and then acoustic explorations, Larry Coryell has often shown that he can play practically any style. This little-known set finds him jamming with violinist Michal Urbaniak and bassist Jesper Lundgaard in a trio. Although the music is generally straight-ahead, all seven of the selections were composed by either Coryell or Urbaniak, and the music is never all that predictable.

This trio date led by Don Friedman is comparable to a typical Bill Evans session in several ways. Joined by bassist George Mraz and drummer Lewis Nash, one hears three strong musicians interacting rather than a rhythm section playing follow-the-leader with the pianist. Secondly, Friedman, like Evans, loves playing great melodies. Finally, Friedman is a gifted composer, though his pieces are obviously not as well known as Evans' works. But the comparison ends there, as Friedman has a distinctive style of his own.

For many years, Willi Boskovsky led the Vienna Philharmonic during the famous New Year's concerts. Violinist and conductor, he had this "Viennese Blood" essential to understand the music of Strauss and know how to mark the dynamics in the most accurate way. Although recorded many years ago (60' and 70') the recording was thoroughly remastered, giving us a fresh sound clarity as if it was recorded during last year's New Year's Concert. The CD includes the most famous waltzes by Johann Strauss (the Blue Danube, Emperor Waltz, Tales of the Vienna Woods…), along with 2 other ones written by his younger brother Joseph (Spharenklange and Dorschwalben aus Ostorreich).

When discussing the inexhaustible and gone-too-soon genius of pianist Bill Evans, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the mass of music released both before and after his tragic death in 1980.

In addition to his lifelong dedication to the Academy of St Martin in the Fields which he founded himself, Neville Marriner was appointed principal conductor of various orchestras, notably the Minnesota Orchestra where he succeeded to Stanisław Skrowaczewski. During his 7-year long mandate, he recorded two albums for EMI, including this program devoted to the music of Aaron Copland, highlighting the ballet suites excerpted from his most popular works inspired by American culture and folklore, Rodeo and Appalachian Spring.
