AVID Jazz here presents four classic Jimmy Raney albums plus including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. A much travelled jazz guitarist Jimmy Raney was born in Louisville Kentucky in 1927, the son of a prominent newspaperman. Starting his musical career in 1944 with the Jerry Wald band, Jimmy would spend time with among others Max Miller and Lou Levy, toured with Woody Herman, worked with Al Haig, Buddy De Franco and Artie Shaw and in 1950 joined up with the Stan Getz Quintet to produce a unique sounding combo sound during their two years together. By 1953 he was on the move again this time hooking up with Red Norvo.

Eleven Complete Mose Allison Albums Over Five Discs Born just outside Tippo, Mississippi on his grandfather's farm (known as The Island because Tippo Bayou encircles it , Mose Allison was already taking piano lessons by the age of five. He picked cotton at home, played piano in grammar school and trumpet in high school, and wrote his first song at age thirteen. He went to college at the University of Mississippi for a semester, then enlisted in the U.S. Army for two years. Shortly after mustering out, he enrolled at Louisiana State University, from which he graduated in 1952 with a BA in English with a minor in Philosophy.

AVID Jazz here presents four classic (and hard to find or expensive) Kenny Drew albums including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. 'Introducing Kenny Drew' (1953); 'This Is New' (1957); 'Talkin & Walkin' (1955) and 'Jazz Impressions of Rodgers & Hart - Pal Joey' (1957). Perhaps unfairly overlooked in a crowded field of great jazz pianists around during his time from Monk, Bud Powell, Horace Silver to Wynton Kelly, Kenny Drew finally got to record this his first album in 1953. Having established himself at last through playing with the likes of Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz and Lester Young he and his fine quartet were finally on their way and touring through 1952 and 1953. All four albums are plus have been digitally re-mastered. Some are also currently hard to find or expensive, so Avid are pleased to be able to make them available once again.

4 CD Set, 32 tracks, 36-page booklet. Documentation in German, English, French, Spanish and Italian. Ice and fire they were: a two-horned paradox. Offstage, one was quiet, pensive, self-critical to a fault, practising obsessively. The other was cocksure, demanding; running with friends rather than running scales. But on the bandstand and on record, they reversed roles. John Coltrane, with saxophone in hand, became the unbridled one: long-winded, garrulous. When Miles Davis raised his trumpet, he played the sensitive introvert, blowing brief, hushed tones, exuding vulnerability. Their names now command reverence, and rarely induce less than eulogy. The music they created together during an almost five-year union still resonates, entrances, influences and sells, sells, sells.

With Acrobat’s catalogue having grown substantially, and its product strategy evolved significantly over the years, we are occasionally looking to repurpose some of our early albums in the context of the product formats that are now more widely used in our releases. This 70-track 3-CD set comprises the complete contents, plus some added titles, of three products released in our ACRCD range more than fifteen years ago, and which offered the opportunity to assemble a nicely coherent, substantial and enhanced single product at a lower price than the three single CDs combined. Those CDs were ACRCD 117, 118 & 119 “Bebop Vols. 1, 2 & 3”. The titles on those three CDs have now been re-compiled in chronological order, with duplicated titles removed and twelve new titles added, along with a substantial booklet. The collection comprises recordings which are seen as significant performances in the genesis and development of bebop as a genre, or regarded as important or notable examples of bebop. The tracks have also been selected so that a significant proportion of the artists regarded as pioneers, innovators or noted exponents of bebop are represented in the collection. On that basis, it features a host of great names not only in bebop but in the wider world of jazz, and the collection offers a highly entertaining an insightful trawl across a dynamic jazz decade.

Two of vibraphonist Gary Burton's albums from 1969-1970 are reissued in full on this single CD. Burton teams up with pianist Keith Jarrett for five numbers (including four of Jarrett's originals) in 1970, using a quintet that also features guitarist Sam Brown, bassist Steve Swallow, and drummer Bill Goodwin. The other session has more of an avant-country flavor, with Burton, Swallow, and Goodwin joined by guitarist Jerry Hahn and violinist Richard Greene; Michael Gibbs and Swallow contributed most of the obscurities. Burton was at his most explorative during this period, which is why he can be considered one of the pioneers of fusion (although his music never really fit into a tight category). This is excellent music that mostly still sounds fresh.
