A companion release to Getz/Gilberto '76, Moments in Time features newly discovered music by the Stan Getz Quartet featuring pianist Joanne Brackeen, bassist Clint Houston, and drummer Billy Hart, recorded live in 1976 at the famed San Francisco jazz club Keystone Korner. Captured during a week of performances with the legendary bossa nova innovator João Gilberto, these instrumental recordings document the only time this uniquely adventurous configuration of the Stan Getz Quartet recorded together.

Stan Getz & Bill Evans (subtitled Previously Unreleased Recordings) is an album by jazz saxophonist Stan Getz and pianist Bill Evans recorded in 1964 for the Verve label, but not released until 1973. The Allmusic review by Ken Dryden awarded the album 4 stars and states: "It is peculiar that Verve shelved the results for over a decade before issuing any of the music, though it may have been felt that Getz and Evans hadn't had enough time to achieve the desired chemistry, though there are memorable moments".

Features the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (compatible with standard CD player) and the latest DSD / HR Cutting remastering. Comes with a description. Features the original LP designs. After gaining initial fame with Woody Herman's band, Stan Getz went solo in the late '40s, hitting his zenith during the bossa nova craze of the early '60s. Before scoring with "Girl From Ipanema," though, Getz established himself with a slew of fine dates for Prestige and Verve, including this one from 1950. At the time, Getz's cool, Lester Young-inspired sound was becoming more distinct and harmonically varied, featuring the beautifully mellifluous tone he would soon turn into his trademark.

Ask a Stan Getz fan to describe his Lester Young-influenced tenor sax playing, and the sort of words that one typically hears include sublime, caressing, gentle, lyrical, and even ethereal. Words like tough, hard, and aggressive usually don't come to mind – that is, unless someone is describing his earliest recordings. In 1945 and 1946, Getz did in fact display a harder tone at times. But by the end of the '40s, he was the epitome of subtle, understated cool jazz. Spanning 1945-1949, The Complete Savoy Recordings takes a look at the saxman's early work and shows how much he evolved during the '40s.

Stan Getz meets João & Astrud Gilberto: New York 1964 is a live recording of bossa nova in the making. In 1989, the Giants of Jazz label released a live recording of a 1964 New York City performance featuring Stan Getz, João Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto, his then-wife. The album, entitled Stan Getz meets João & Astrud Gilberto is actually misleading: the trio had met previously in 1963 for the recording of the wildly successful album Getz/Gilberto, which was released in 1964 and set off the bossa nova frenzy in the U.S. As a result of that album’s success, the Brazilian Gilbertos and the American Getz played a number of shows in the U.S., such as the one recorded here. Released as part of the “Immortal Concerts” series, this recording exhibits the chemistry the three obviously shared and captures bossa nova in its infancy, as it was still being created and defined.

If you've ever wondered what gems may have been hidden away in the Stan Getz musical archives, then think no further. Chicago saxophonist/educator Mark Colby has done an excellent job of culling compositions from a variety of sources that exemplify the warmth, lyricism, and emotion that became the indelible imprint in Stan Getz's sound. Among those songs are three new compositions written by Colby, Bob Meyer, and Chris Madsen that speak to heart of Getz's ability to play back his innate musicality.

A great little follow-up to the classic West Coast Jazz album recorded by Stan Getz – and like that one, a set to feature some great rhythm accompaniment from the trio of Lou Levy on piano, Stan Levey on drums, and Leroy Vinnegar on bass! The tracks are nice and open – with plenty of room for Stan to roam around – and although you might expect a tightly-arranged kind of sound from the west coast setting, the album's actually surprisingly more relaxed – a fair bit like some of the more open-ended jazz that Shelly Manne started to record on his own at the start of the 60s.

One of the all-time great tenor saxophonists, Stan Getz was known as "The Sound" because he had one of the most beautiful tones ever heard. Getz, whose main early influence was Lester Young, grew to be a major influence himself, and to his credit he never stopped evolving…
