Tone-setting opener "Blood Runs Deep" alternates between the bludgeoning Neanderthal riffing of Black Sabbath and the horn- and keyboard-sparked refinements of a Genesis or Atomic Rooster; "Mijo and the Laying of the Witch" moves from portentous King Crimson horn lines to a North African Bedouin camp luau before settling into an insistent heavy trudge marked by histrionic vocals à la Sir Lord Baltimore; the title track prefaces its own proto-metallic freakout with a pagan toast featuring wooden blocks and woodland flutes sounding like Jethro Tull at their most eerie, and these qualities are also shared with the pernicious bolero "Black Jewel of the Forest"…

The 24 track double CD Gary Holton & Casino Steel Vol 1 & 2 is the definitive collection of the strange, pale, black-haired bandido brothers Holton/Steel. The compilation reveals a mix of Gary and Casino's musical tastes - from the Neo-Spector-ish country of "Ruby (Don't Take Your Love to Town)" and "Ghostriders (in the Sky)" to the punk spirit of "Pick Me Up", "Goodnight Irene" and "Jimmy Brown". Throw in some perfect covers of neglected classics like "Blackberry Way" and "No Reply". Magic! Gary Holton & Casino Steel Vol. 1 & 2 was recorded in Nidaros Studio, Norway and in Olympic Recording Studios in Barnes, West London at varying times between 1979 and '84. The career-spanning 2 CD has been compiled by Casino Steel and Holton/Steel biographer Tom Kristensen, and features hits, favourite B-sides and classic album tracks. The set is packaged in a deluxe four panel digipack and contains a 20-page booklet of exclusive photographs and artwork, as well as detailed notes and commentary.
