The Story of Light (full title from booklet is, The Story of Light "Real Illusions: …of a…") is the eighth studio album by American guitarist and songwriter, Steve Vai, which was released on August 14, 2012 on Favored Nations. This is Vai's first full-length studio album since 2005's "Real Illusions: Reflections". On May 23, 2012, the album was made available for pre-order through Vai's official website with an instant download of "Gravity Storm". The track "John the Revelator" contains a sample of Blind Willie Johnson's "John the Revelator". "The Moon and I" was initially released as a VaiTunes digital only single in 2010. However, due to the personal nature of the song, Steve decided to remix the song and include it on the album. The album debuted on Billboard 200 at No. 78.

The spiritual element of guitar virtuoso Steve Vai's music has always been rather like the music itself: flamboyant, but heartfelt; sincere, but not always a cinch to understand. Nowhere is that more evident than on The 7th Song, a sort of greatest-hits collection with a most peculiar concept behind it. Vai, who's always reserved track number 7 on every album for a guitar ballad, puts them all together on one collection, from "Call It Sleep" off Flex-Able to "Touching Tongues" off of Sex and Religion. Steve Vai's first album for Sony/Legacy is Stillness in Motion, a double-live set – it's available as a two-CD/two-DVD package – that captures the guitarist's October 12, 2012 concert at Club Nokia in Los Angeles. This is, for want of a better word, something of an extravaganza: 22 tracks over the course of 130 minutes, Vai dipping into nearly every phase of his career. He's as precise on-stage as he is in the studio, which may mean Stillness in Motion lacks the kinetic energy that is the hallmark of so many great live albums. What it has instead is fluidity: Vai and his backing band may specialize in pyrotechnics, but there's a grace to the playing on even the frenetic numbers, and that lyricism may be eye-opening to skeptics. To the converted, it is certainly a good reason to dive into this generous live set.
