This release takes us to the fashionable salons of late 19th-century Paris. Superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott partner in this album of elegant French chamber music aptly titled "Paris: La Belle Époque". The recording features a combination of major works and well-known shorter pieces, all transcribed from their original versions for violin. The Faure Violin Sonata #1 and Franck Violin Sonata in A Major both take on a rich, warm character in cello transcription, and Massenet's ever-popular "Meditation from Thais" and Saint-Saens' exotic Havanaise work equally well as arranged by Ma. The cello and piano playing are both top-notch in this recording - refined and elegant overall, yet dramatic and exciting when called for (particularly in the Franck). It's not surprising that Stott and Ma's previous collaboration, "Soul of the Tango", won a Grammy.

This disc introduces Yo-Yo Ma's latest and most ambitious adventure, the Silk Road Project. It explores the cultures that flourished along the Silk Road, the ancient trade route that for centuries connected Europe and the East. Founded by Ma in 1998, the project aims to create connections, mutual trust, and cultural interchange between people from different parts of the world through their only shared language: music. This recording includes music from Mongolia, China, Persia, Japan, Iran, Azerbaijan, and an improvisation on an Italian Renaissance street song, performed by musicians from all those countries, as well as America, on both Eastern and Western instruments.

For many serious jazz fans, no pianist has ever approached the technical mastery of Art Tatum, though his virtuoso skills usually meant he was at his best unaccompanied. Many of his recordings from the 1930s and '40s were limited by the deficiencies of recording methods at the time. Zenph Studios decided to use 21st century computer technology to re-create this album, both the 1933 studio session and the famous 1949 concert…

Bach showed that the cello can dance, but composers from Rossini to Shostakovich have favored it as an instrument of pensive reflection and brooding melancholy. The playful cover photo notwithstanding, SOLO features Yo-Yo Ma in five 20th century cello works of a serious nature, all with folk influence and all echoing at least a bit of the troubles of the times in which they were written.

Mozart’s return to Vienna in 1781 initiated a remarkable period of inventiveness and productivity. In late 1784 he wrote the Piano Concerto No. 19 in F major, a work Mozart performed in Frankfurt on the occasion of Leopold II’s election as Holy Roman Emperor and which is notable for its rhythmic vivacity and sense of colour. In 1786 he wrote the Piano Concerto No. 25 in C major – a work that stretched the concerto genre considerably with its operatic qualities and dramatic dialogue. Ignaz Lachner’s ingenious transcriptions show a complete grasp of Mozart’s idiom, incorporating much instrumental detail and reinventing the music’s underlying dramatic scheme within a chamber context.

Pianist Alon Goldstein is joined by American chamber music ensemble the Fine Arts Quartet and special guest Rachel Calin on double bass for the world premiere recordings of these chamber versions of two of Mozart’s greatest and most popular piano concertos. To make the two works more accessible to the public, 19th century composer Ignaz Lachner left the piano parts untouched and wrote splendid string quartet transcriptions of the orchestra parts with added bass. These arrangements sound almost as natural as if Mozart had transcribed them himself.
