Sardinian-born trumpeter Paolo Fresu and bandoneonist Daniele di Bonaventura from Fermo, Italy, indicated the depth of their musical understanding on 2010’s "Mistico Mediterraneo", a collaboration with Corsican singers A Filetta. Left to their own resources they explore a very broad range of material which includes original ballads by both men, improvisations, a Puccini theme from La Boheme, liturgical music, pieces by legendary Chilean songwriter Victor Jara and Uruguayan singer-songwriter Jaime Roos, music of Neapolitan composer Ernesto de Curtis, “O que sera” by Brazil’s Chico Buarque and more. Daniele Di Bonaventura has spent much of his creative life bringing aspects of jazz and music of South American traditions together, and Paolo Fresu is one of the outstanding lyrical voices of contemporary improvising.

First leader date for prizewinning Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick who has already contributed significantly to ECM discs by Manu Katchй, Jacob Young and Iro Haarla, and co-directed the popular jazz-ambient-rock group Jaga Jazzist. Here his melodically intense trumpet sings over fractured rhythms and grooves. Jon Balke’s performance on acoustic and electric pianos is a marvel of supportive invention, Audun Kleive hammers home the beats, and Stian Carstensen from Farmer’s Market guests on pedal steel guitar. The resourceful Eick plays vibes and guitar as well, but it is his trumpet that is the subject of this attractive set, moving through a programme of many colours.

Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick’s expressive playing, which according to the New York Times radiates a “pristine yet penetrating tone”, is remarkably well complemented in the company of his gifted supporting players and fellow travelers. Violinist Håkon Aase, one of the outstanding improvisers of his generation, shadows the leader with lines that reflect a profound background in folk as well as jazz. Drummers Helge Andeas Norbakken and Torstein Lofthus mirror their exchanges, as they interact with purring precision. Near the centre of the action, pianist Andras Ulvo and bass guitarist Audun Erlien ferry ideas between frontline and rhythm section and make statements of their own. On several tracks, the delicate swell of Stian Carstensen’s pedal steel guitar adds a dimension of mystery. When we leave was recorded at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio in August 2020.

Essays is the band's 4th studio album, with songs written over three centuries, between 1614 and 1911, from the baroque masters of Monteverdi, Rameau and Charpentier, to the romantic era of Schumann, Brahms, Grieg and Fauré. The songs on the album are sung in French, Italian, German and Norwegian, as well as in English in two songs by Elgar and Engel.
