Jethro Tull's best album of the 1990s, a surging, hard-rocking monster (at least, compared to anything immediately before or since) that doesn't lose sight of good tunes or the folk sources that have served this band well. The lineup this time out is Anderson on acoustic and electric guitars, flute, and electric and acoustic mandolins, Martin Barre on electric guitar, Doane Perry on drums, Dave Pegg on bass, and Andrew Giddings on keyboards. The real difference between this and most of the group's output since the end of the '70s lies in the songs, all of which are approached with serious energy and enthusiasm; the lyrics are completely forgettable, but for the first time since War Child, the band sounds like they're playing as though their lives depended on it.

As a 30+ year super-fan and admirer of the NGDB, a live show from this specific era was a welcomed find. The sound quality is generally good, capturing the on-stage sound authentically, technical flaws and all, keeping the crowd noise to a minimum. The repertoire is a full representation of what the band was playing at the time and a majority of their well-known songs are present.

Crown of Creation appeared ten months after their last album, After Bathing at Baxter's, and it doesn't take the same kind of leap forward that Baxter's did from Surrealistic Pillow. Indeed, in many ways, Crown of Creation is a more conservative album stylistically, opening with "Lather," a Grace Slick original that was one of the group's very last forays (and certainly their last prominent one) into a folk idiom. Much of what follows is a lot more based in electric rock, as well as steeped in elements of science fiction (specifically author John Wyndham's book The Chrysalids) in several places, but Crown of Creation was still deliberately more accessible musically than its predecessor, even as the playing became more bold and daring within more traditional song structures…

At the muddy miracle that was Woodstock, the most miraculous performance just might have been Jefferson Airplane's. The band had been one of the first to sign on for the festival, their imprimatur prompting many other acts to hop on board, and their stature had landed them a coveted headlining slot closing Saturday night's schedule. But, as the torrential downpours and the unexpected crush of half a million people kept on delaying their set, the chances of putting on anything approaching a quality performance seemed to diminish. According to Paul Kantner, "We were supposed to go on at 10:30 at night and we'd been up and down about four or five times on acid that night, getting ready to go on, and then everything was delayed for whatever reasons.

Brooklyn was gentrifying but still affordable during the ’90s, when another wave of Boomers and post-Boomers — Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, Tim Berne, Craig Taborn, Robert Glasper, and Arturo O’Farrill among them — entered the mix. That wave also included bassist Joris Teepe, born in the Netherlands, now 56, who is the fulcrum of this kinetic, sophisticated, endlessly creative trio recital. During those years, Teepe lived in the Windsor Terrace neighborhood, around the corner from Prospect Park, not far from the residence of drummer Billy Hart, 78, originally from Washington, D.C., who both propels and unifies the proceedings from the first note to the last with fresh, shamanistically intuitive ideas.

Thelonious Monk meets the mighty Oliver Nelson – the hip bigger band arranger who was helping so many other artists find their groove back in the 60s! The result is less Nelson-led than some of Oliver's other albums of the time – and instead, the arranger is nicely respectful of Monk's core sound – and still manages to led Thelonious keep the frontline strong on piano, and work with familiar players are the core who include Charlie Rouse on tenor, Larry Gales on bass, and Ben Riley on drums. Nelson's touch seeks mostly to augment the Monkish lines with some larger horn shadings – sometimes a bit upbeat, but never more swinging than Monk might want. There's enough of a blue tone here to keep this one nicely in line with the rest of the 60s Columbia catalog for Thelonious – and titles include "Monk's Point", "Consecutive Seconds", "Let's Cool One", and "Rootie Tootie". CD features 2 bonus tracks – "Blue Monk" and "Round Midnight".

This debut album from Seattle's Storm Chronicles is surprisingly rich and mature for an opening statement. At first listen, you'd assume David Burr (keyboards/guitars/drums/bass/vocals/samples) and Jody Dietz (vocals) have been playing together forever. And you'd be almost right. Although the two only have been performing together since 2011, the music on Looking Backward has been in development nearly two decades (which partly explains the title). The result is a satisfying blend of symphonic progressive rock, ambient atmospherics and melodic pop…
