When David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash created this pop super trio in 1968 after their splits from the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and The Hollies, respectively, it would have been a pipedream that a hits package released 37 years later would sound as eternal and essential as this one. The 19 songs straddle the four-album, landscape-altered timeframe between 1969's post-Woodstock debut Crosby, Stills & Nash and 1982's Daylight Again, which helped inaugurate the MTV era. Unbalanced sequencing–which randomly bounces 12 years ahead and five years back–is rescued by the superb harmonies, unique songwriting and divergent personalities of the three members. With politics and culture always at the forefront, Stills bookends the band's trademark canon with "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Southern Cross," Nash incorporates Eastern influences to "Marrakesh Express" and folk timber to "Just a Song Before I Go" and "Teach Your Children," and the ever-capricious Crosby leads the way lyrically with the lingering "Delta" to the Robert Kennedy tribute "Long Time Gone".

By 1997, Crosby, Stills & Nash were without a label thanks to a drastic artistic slump, but they began working on a new album, paying for studio time out of their own pockets. Neil Young expressed interest in the tapes, and suddenly, a new CSNY album was in the works. Even though Young's continual tinkering pushed its release back by months, Looking Forward still feels rushed and half-finished. It's immediately apparent that the record began as a self-financed project; it sounds weirdly muted, as if all the levels weren't set accurately; similarly, it's possible to hear sometimes awkward overdubs added to basically completed tracks. While they may have named the album Looking Forward, CSNY are alternately nostalgic and haunted by the past, which colors their attempts to look toward the future. All four of Young's songs fit squarely within the Harvest tradition, as he tries to balance his restless nature with growing old…

2005 released 2nd solo album from the son of CSN's Stephen Stills & French superstar Veronique Sanson. Stills explores the ties between the 2 cultures that nurtured his life- French songs and American rock. "My French culture has always been a part of my life but it was time for me to do something with it." The album is bilingual, with Stills singing for the first time in his mother tongue: French. "This allowed me to discover another side of myself," explains Chris, "recalling another culture in my art.". He composed the English material and collaborated for the French songs with native songwriters & composers: Philippe Djian who wrote the lyrics for 2 songs composed by Stephan Eicher ("La fin du monde" & "Demon"), Jean-Louis Murat ("Kitty Catty"), while ex-Alain Bashung lyricist Boris Bergman wrote "DeuxiŠme Chance". Ryan Adams lent a helping hand on "For You". Finally, "Fool for Love" was written by Chris, the album's producer Hod David and the phenomenal producer, Ethan Johns.

The enduring charm, contemporary relevance, and harmonic convergence of Crosby, Stills & Nash's fabled self-titled debut owe not only to impeccably played songs and resonant lyrics, but to career-defining performances by music's first genuine supergroup. Crosby, Stills & Nash lingers as an example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. Factor in phenomenal studio production and acoustic-based architecture that served as guideposts for myriad albums that followed, and popular music would never be the same.

As the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) had done a year earlier, Super Session (1968) initially ushered in several new phases in rock & roll's concurrent transformation. In the space of months, the soundscape of rock shifted radically from short, danceable pop songs to comparatively longer works with more attention to technical and musical subtleties. Enter the unlikely all-star triumvirate of Al Kooper (piano/organ/ondioline/vocals/guitars), Mike Bloomfield (guitar), and Stephen Stills (guitar) – all of whom were concurrently "on hiatus" from their most recent engagements. Kooper had just split after masterminding the groundbreaking Child Is Father to the Man (1968) version of Blood, Sweat & Tears. Bloomfield was fresh from a stint with the likewise brass-driven Electric Flag, while Stills was late of Buffalo Springfield and still a few weeks away from a full-time commitment to David Crosby and Graham Nash. Although the trio never actually performed together, the long-player was notable for idiosyncratically featuring one side led by the team of Kooper/Bloomfield and the other by Kooper/Stills.

CLASSIC CSNY NEW YORK BROADCAST FROM THE SUMMER OF 1970 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young made their much publicized live debut in the summer of 1969. Their high profile set at the original Woodstock Festival was their second show together and remains their best known, but they did a substantial amount of touring that summer and performed together in Europe in January 1970. Neil Young booked a solo tour with Crazy Horse early in 1970 too, but CSNY reconvened for their second outing in the summer of 70. Déjà vu, the quartet s debut album was released in March 1970 and beginning May 12th in Denver, they played twenty-three shows through to the middle of July. The super-group performed six shows at the Fillmore East in New York from June 2nd to June 7th, the longest engagement of the tour, and while all these concerts were both recorded and filmed, only their 7th June show was broadcast across FM radio. Now featured in its entirety on this double CD, this stunning performance which features songs from CSN, Déjà vu and many of CSNY members solo records, is available here to be enjoyed by fans, almost 50 years after the show took place.
