"Short Stories" is the debut album by Jon and Vangelis, the collaborative effort between Jon Anderson of the prog rock band Yes and electronic music pioneer Evangelos Papathanassiou.
Jesper Bodilsen is well known in Europe, though he hasn't gained a lot of exposure on American jazz CDs. But this beautiful session is an excellent starting point for anyone not already familiar with his extensive work as a sideman. The personnel varies from one track to the next, with guitarist Ulf Wakenius being his primarily collaborator, and trumpeter Peter Asplund and vibraphonist Severi Pyyasalo rounding out the group. Five of the tracks are originals penned by the leader.
Pianist/composer Christian Sands’ cinematic approach to popular holiday classics takes center stage with Christmas Stories, his first album since his critically acclaimed, GRAMMY® nominated 2020 release Be Water. Having performed in-demand Christmas shows at Jazz at Lincoln Center and around the world, Sands offers such classics as “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “Silent Night,” “Jingle Bells,” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” as well as a few surprises. Joining the NAACP Image Award nominee are vibraphonist Stefon Harris, saxophonist Jimmy Greene, guitarists Max Light and Marvin Sewell, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, percussionist Keita Ogawa, and drummer Ryan Sands.
Billed as Joe Zawinul's First Symphony, this large-scale classical work may seem like a radical departure to the composer/keyboardist's jazz and pop fans, but it is really a logical expression of Zawinul's indestructible European roots. Moreover, it is not as alien to his jazz work as one might suppose; at times, one can hear trademark Zawinul ostinato lines in fleshed-out, orchestrated form, and rhythms and tunes of his jazz-rock days ("Doctor Honoris Causa," "Pharoah's Dance" "Unknown Soldier") turn up like old friends crashing a black-tie ceremony.
MR. BIG fans have been rejoicing by the group's steady output of albums since the 2008 one-off reunion featuring Paul Gilbert and his band mates including one-time guitarist Richie Kotzen. MR. BIG is only blowing up the charts in Japan and other ports overseas, but that doesn't stop them from releasing quality albums as if their standing in the American music market depends on it…
Elise McCann – the delightful, award-winning Miss Honey from the smash-hit musical Matilda – brings alive her life-long love of the stories of Roald Dahl with an entrancing new album: Dahlesque.
Stories Without Words is an exuberant Spyro Gyra record. It was released in 1987. It's one of their best recordings that I have ever heard from them. It ranks up their with the best of them. Exs. Point Of View, City Kids, Fast Forward. It seems to place its musical emphasis on the drums/percussion section and the vibes/marimba. It's a terrific cd with extraordinary melodies.
The last time Pelican put an album out, there was still only one Avengers movie. A lot has happened to the members of the Chicago/L.A. instrumetal quartet since theт - side and solo projects, the deaths of family members and former bandmates, the birth of children. It’s heavy stuff. And Nighttime Stories is a heavy record. Maybe their heaviest to date, despite its titular promise of soothing sleepytime music. With titles taken from lyrics by Jody Minnoch (the late frontman of guitarist Trevor de Brauw’s Tusk project), compositions by newest member Dallas Thomas (of the Swan King) and production courtesy of Sanford Parker (who helmed their first two releases), their sixth LP is both a look at where they’ve been and a guide towards the future…
This CD offers 75 minutes of dynamic electronic music. Joining Boots on this release are: Klaus Hoffmann Hoock on guitar, Harold van der Heijden and Guido Negraszus on drums, and Eric van der Heijden.
Even the most discriminating audiophile will be captivated from the onset of this CD. Crystalline keyboards tremble with icy clarity, while majestic drums delineate powerfully engaging rhythms. Sparkling electronic embellishments cavort in a gloriously twilight sky, evoking strong promise for an optimistic sunrise. A thrilling drama permeates this song, reaching deep into the human soul to stir legendary courage and bring such emotions cascading to the surface of the audience's mind. The melodic music is wrought with sinewy disposition tempered with humanitarian sympathy, a masterful fusion of strength and compassion that will delight as equally as it mesmerizes…
