It's hard to pull off a tribute album to a recently deceased celebrity with grace and style, but Diana, Princess of Wales: Tribute works extraordinary well. None of the songs on the two discs are explicitly about Diana, but the generally wistful, melancholy tone captures the feeling of mass mourning and regret. And, on the most basic level, it offers a collection of strong mainstream '90s pop songs. Only three of the songs – Neil Finn's new solo acoustic take of "Don't Dream It's Over," Peter Gabriel's "In the Sun," and Rod Stewart's fine cover of Dylan's "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" – are new recordings, and most of the collection features familiar items: Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever," Annie Lennox's "Angel," Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia," Seal's "Prayer for the Dying," Des'ree's "You Gotta Be," Michael Jackson's "You Are Not Alone," Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart," Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All," Celine Dion's "Because You Love Me," Gloria Estefan's "Don't Want to Lose You," Simply Red's "Stars," Puff Daddy's "Miss You," Mariah Carey's "Hero," and Spice Girls' "Mama."

By 1966, soul was the dominant musical genre throughout the US, and New York was THE recording centre, producing more records than anywhere else. This CD avoids the better-known hits, and you may not have heard of a lot of the singers, but these tracks, often from tiny labels, represent the sound of the city rather better than many big label productions. This is the sound from the streets and clubs music that got heard and appreciated way below the radar.

The title track on Streets of Laredo’s new album, WILD, essentially sums up their attitude since starting the band in Auckland almost five years ago. It’s a gorgeous, soul-stirring ballad with a haunting trumpet line, buttery harmonies, and a chorus that goes: “They call us wild / Let’s show them wild.” Indeed there is a newfound confidence running throughout WILD - from the title track and “99.9%” to the eerily catchy “Silly Bones” and a sweet, lilting tune called “Doesn’t Even Bother Me,” which Sarahjane describes as “this beautiful sentiment about not feeling like you need to be in the mix all the time in NYC, but finding a way to live a happy, normal life with your family.” She continues: “We have an ideal situation, where we can do this and it doesn’t take us away from each other. When we tour and play it feels like we’re living a good life together and fulfilling our dreams. The trick is remembering to find the magic in the moment.”

Lavishly Packaged Love Letter To The Final Years Of Stax!
Stax Records was black and white coming together in a pioneering integrated music enterprise. Native Tennessean Jim Stewart founded Satellite in the late 1950s but soon joined up with sister Estelle Axton and rechristened the label Stax Records (the “St” and “ax” of Stax respectively). This ever-evolving Memphis-based label became one of the landmark touchstones of soul, R&B, and funk throughout the 1960s and 70s, its finger snapping logo brand synonymous with sonic quality and heartfelt integrity. Releasing hundreds of long players and 45-rpm singles during its heyday, the imprint and its many subsidiaries also birthed the legendary careers of Booker T & The M.G.’s, Otis Redding, and Isaac Hayes.
