The piano trio in Jazz - it does not get more essential than this. On these ten CDs fifteen excellent alliances of piano, bass, and drums present prime examples of what has often been called Jazz' "chamber music". A perfect and poignant introduction to the genre, this collection of nineteen original albums also serves as a beautiful reminder of just how diverse this instrumental combination could be made to sound in the late 50s and early 60s. Just listen to the way a standard like Cole Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love" is interpreted by Bill Evans with his trio of Scott La Faro on bass and Paul Motian on drums or by Barry Harris, who also played with Miles Davis back in his hometown of Detroit, when accompanied by Joe Benjamin and Elvin Jones. Or how differently "Caravan" sounds when played by Thelonious Monk on his tribute to Duke Ellington or by the eminent Kenny Drew. Take away the bio- and discographic details and all musicological mumbo jumbo and the music will speak for itself, always deeply touching and emotionally sublime, perfectly suited for a Sunday at the riverside - or any other weekday or location for that matter.

The New Herd of Toshiyuki Miyama was one of the greatest large ensembles in Japanese jazz during the 70s – and here, they've got an extra-special sort of sound, thanks to the presence of guitarist Kozaburo Yamaki – who not only solos on all tracks, but also wrote some great original material for the record! Yamaki's tunes have this rising sort of majesty that makes the Herd sound even more powerful than usual – some spiritual currents they don't always have, and which are underscored both by the guitar lines, and the way the rhythms build nicely on the longer tunes. Titles include "Sunday Thing", "Friends", "Plain Song", "Sweet Heart Blues", "Soft Rain", and "Memories".

Rain Tree Crow is the result of a collaboration between former Japan members David Sylvian and Mick Karn. Sylvian and Karn teamed with keyboardist Richard Barbieri and Steve Jansen, adding guitarists Phil Palmer and Bill Nelson for their self-titled debut. Like a mellower, new age-oriented version of Japan, Rain Tree Crow explores stark soundscapes that sound alternately beautiful and desolate. Although it is a bit too challenging to provide a good introduction to Sylvian and Karn's music, the album remains fascinating for their fans.
