In Letters to My Future Self, American composer and violist Nick Revel takes us on a musical journey of a constantly morphing Soundscape of styles and genres. This is all performed on viola, but some tracks also have cello, a guitar, or a second viola. This is a fascinating and enjoyable musical experience. Nick Revel is a violist, composer, improviser, and educator. He is a violist in PUBLIQuartet, string quartet, Folie à Deux, and New York String Studio, which he co-created with his wife and fellow violist Nora. The NY String Studio teaching philosophy draws on methods of self-awareness practices, Suzuki Method, Alexander Technique, meditation, and Madeline Bruser’s “The Art of Practicing.” He also founded the chamber music program at the Talent Education Suzuki School in Norwalk, CT, where he has coached string quartets for five years. Letters to My Future Self is Nick’s debut solo album.

Genre: Fusion, Smooth Jazz

Though he's skirted around in various genres, for Full Circle, as the title suggests, David Benoit returns to where he started: contemporary jazz. With the same set of musicians in the same studio as the ones who were used on the 1985 release This Side Up, Benoit plays his piano expertly through all ten tracks on the album (and only one, "Aqua de Beber," by Jobim and de Moraes, is a cover). It is, in short, smooth jazz at its finest, which means a lot of horns, a happily funky bass, pretty breaks, and a whole lot of production.

Folk / Nordic Folk / Finland

I have heard JPP perform many times and have always had high praise for their performances as well as the talents of individual members of the band. Harmonium player Timo Alakotila is one of Finland's best composers, and an arranger sought after by anyone there looking to add a special character to their work. Arto Järvelä is a master fiddler who has appeared on more records than can be counted. He and Alakotila are integral members of some of the nation's best new folk ensembles.
