Firma Melodiya presents a complete set of orchestral music by one of the most influential domestic composers of the 20th century Tikhon Khrennikov. The musician headed the USSR Union of Composers for more than fifty years combining crucial organizational activities with a busy creative and educational work. His compositions were performed by some of the leading orchestras, music theatres and best-known performers of the Soviet Union. Then, due to social and political rather than artistic reasons, many of his works were consigned to oblivion. Today, when time puts everything into place, the best qualities of Tikhon Khrennikov's music return it to the concert bills and listeners' hearts. The composer's bright, Prokofiev-like sunny melodies, simplicity and clarity of the musical language, harmonic originality, and heartwarming and optimistic spirit, which were typical of his style since he was a young man, remained intact in his latter works as well. Khrennikov's prowess of symphonic drama and exquisite understanding of the concert genre and nature of each of the soloing instruments (piano, violin and cello) are needless to mention.

After the tremendous success of Swan Lake, Vladimir Jurowski and the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia “Evgeny Svetlanov” continue their Tchaikovksy ballet series on PENTATONE with this recording of The Nutcracker. Tchaikovsky’s enchanting masterpiece is an absolute audience favourite, thanks to hits such as the Waltz of the Flowers, Trepak and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, but also due to the composer’s ability to evoke a sense of wonder in listeners both young and old. Vladimir Jurowski and his players tell this story about the power of fantasy with unprecedented zeal, demonstrating the symphonic refinement and orchestral brilliance of Tchaikovsky’s score.

Swan Lake is the first of the three great ballets that Tchaikovsky wrote, and arguably the most famous. The piece is mainly known in the shape it obtained in 1895, when it became a classic in the choreography of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. That “imperial” version strayed from Tchaikovsky’s world premiere score, with several cuts, abridgements and displacements. This high definition recording presents the work as it was heard during the 1877 world premiere performance, highlighting the extraordinary symphonic qualities of Tchaikovsky's original conception.

…Overall, I find this a must-have and a stunning interpretation regardless of whether it's an SACD or not. Lovers of this piece should not hesitate to get this. The SACD has 27 tracks and is about 55 min long. The interpretation is exciting, flexible, and lithe, and that's all anyone could ask for in a Prokofiev piece as great as this. That I'm inspired to watch the movie again is a testament to the performance and the movie because, to me, it's so hard to separate the two.

Had he lived into the age of recordings instead of dying in 1915, Scriabin would no doubt have relished the idea of listening to a complete cycle of his own symphonic works. Of course, had he lived into the age of recordings, Scriabin would have added only one other work to his oeuvre – the Mysterium for soloists, choruses, and orchestras along with actors, dancers, perfumers, and light projector operators plus percussionists striking bells suspended from balloons – because, according to the composer, at the conclusion of the work's premiere, the world as we know it would have come to an end with the transfiguration of humanity, thereby foreclosing further opportunities for listening to recordings.
